Got up on Saturday morning with the knowledge it was my day to monitor pending comments on my group blog (see here: http://southernsizzleromance.wordpress.com/ ) since we had a guest blogger. When we get a guest on the blog, we get a lot of first time commenters. When that happens, someone has to go in and approve the comments. I know I have to check that all the time. Well, imagine my chagrin when I got up to no internet. It was very odd. We have 5 computers in the house and they all had a green light saying they were hooked into the linksys. But nothing would come on. I rebooted the desktop three times and still nothing. Brilliant spouse comes in and picks up the telephone to make a call and discovers NO phone service. AHH. Explanation- it never dawned on me to check the phone line. DUH!
So, he calls the phone co on his cell and they say the phone will be fixed by 8/27. I asked him, “8:27 p.m?” His response? “No – 8/27/2010. The date.” “Uh- no phone for 6 DAYS???” Really? I was SURE they weren’t gonna credit my bill for 6 days of no service. Spouse called again a few hours later and they said 8/24/10 that time. Wild- and I still had to check those dang comments. Stress. But then I decided, heck- get to work on those edits you wanted to do- At RWA Pro Retreat, I won a critique from Harlequin Blaze and I wanted to get that sent out this week so I started to work on those.
I told my sons that the one good thing about no phone was we weren’t getting the political calls that have been inundating us – we have primary elections here Tuesday and it has been crazy with the calls. # 2 son said our house was like living in the early 1990s- pre internet. Since he was born in 1994, don’t know how he could make that analogy, but that’s another story for another day.
Later in the day, after I made arrangements to get to a hot spot to check the comments, I got a call on my cell phone (since the home line was making funky noises) from my dad. He farms on a piece of property near my house and he’d gotten a call from the owner that lives out of state. It seems someone had gone off the road at 5:30 a.m. and knocked over the power pole into the house where dad farms. There was a hole in the roof- the power co had called the man and he wanted my dad to go out and check out the damage. When he got there, he saw them digging a new hole and putting up a new power pole. The telephone dude stood to the side. Telephone man complained to dad that he’d been waiting like 8 hours for the new pole to go up so he could fix the phone lines as all the phones to the East of this house were out and had been all day. Dad asked him if that included my street- yep, it did. So, once the pole was up, the guy got to work and I had a phone around 7 pm. Guess how I found out????? YEP! A political call! Shocker, I know.
So, I was back in the internet business. BUT I did get 4350 words added to latest WIP- I edited Chapters 1-4 and finished Ch 5- broke 20,000 words. It was a productive day anyway. Now, on to working on the two stories that I have re-write requests/requests from three editors and an agent. Wish me luck.
