Friday Facts- July 8, 2011- Northwest Passage

Since my book, Redemption for the Devil comes out a week from today, I thought I’d talk a bit about the Arctic Ocean and the Northwest Passage that was first navigated by Roald Amundsen between 1903 and 1906. This is a sea route that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Many explorers tried to open that route for many, many years. Amundsen was the first to  have success. Canada says the Passage is theirs and the US and European countries say it is an international strait. Right now, it’s open for use for free passage.

In my novel, the heroine’s father is an adventurer and is fascinated by the Northwest Passage and takes off to explore it for himself. His ship goes down and he’s presumed dead. This, and the fact that her cousin comes to Cork, Ireland to take over the business, is the impetus for Peg to search for a new life in America and thus begins her story and her adventure.

I have always been fascinated by the great white North and this was a fun way to pull it into my stories.

While I was in New York for the RWA conference, my friend and I went to see How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. It stars Daniel Radcliffe and John Larroquette.  Anderson Cooper is the voice of the narrator.

Let me just tell you, it was fantastic. I saw Daniel in Equus and he was amazing in that dark and dramatic role. This show I saw this past weekend was the total opposite on the spectrum; light, witty and very high energy.  It was such fun. Dancing and singing and even some gymnastics. The man can really perform. Daniel puts all he has in the role and I could tell. I was on the second row and could see the sweat on his brow as he danced and ran around. He’s going to go a long way in his career. He’s just adoreable.

John Larroquette was spectacular as well. No one can quite pull off deadpan like he can (except maybe Tim Conway).  John was cute and funny. He played his role to perfection and his dance number with Daniel was priceless. They were just too funny. AND, what I especially liked was the way John bowed to Daniel as he presented him to the audience at the curtain call. He won a Tony but he bowed to Dan as the star of the show. That’s very impressive to me.

See this one if you get a chance. You won’t regret it.

Friday Facts- July 1, 2011- Manhattan

The original of this post got accidently erased when I was showing someone how to use WordPress- ironic, huh?

Manhattan is an island and one of the five boroughs that  make up New York City.  It has been a seaport for many hundreds of years.  I’ve taken a cruise around the whole island and it’s amazing how it goes from vastly populated at the south end to woods at the north. Also, the Staten Island Ferry is a cool, FREE, way to see the island from the water. It travels all day every 20 minutes between the two islands. You can get a nice view of Lady Liberty as well.

Cover Love

I got the cover for my July 15, 2011 release from Desert Breeze Publishing just as I was leaving to come here to NYC. Check it out. I’m sooo crazy about it, I just about can’t live with myself. Jenifer Ranieri, cover artist extraordinaire, captured the essence of the story beautifully.

Leaving on a Jet Plane

I’m leaving today to go to the national conference of Romance Writers in New York City. I’ll be staying at this Marriott- the Marriott Marquis. I love New York. It’s such an alive city. I know I probably won’t get out of the hotel much since I’ll be in conference mode, but I’ll be in one of my favorite places on Earth and I’ll pop over and have a piece of Junior’s cheesecake. I also plan to catch a Broadway show on Saturday after the conference. I have my tickets already. Second row, aisle seat. I’m seeing Daniel Radcliffe and John Larroquette in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.  My friend that’s going with me has never seen a Broadway show before so that will make it even more special.

I’m also super excited to meet some people I call friends that I’ve never seen in person- and Laurie, that means you! It’s going to be a blast. I have some cute promos I’ll have out in the goodie room that my staff helped me work on. Let’s just hope they do some work while I’m gone.  LOL!

Midnight in Paris- A Movie Review

I went to see Midnight in Paris at the theatre this weekend. It’s a Woody Allen film starring Owen Wilson. I quite enjoyed it. The scenery in the opening sequence is breathtaking and we get taken on a tour around the city of Paris through the eyes of the camera. I actually think I saw the director playing petenque in that sequence.   The film is quite beautiful throughout in the indoor as well as outdoor shots. The costumes and the settings are exquisitely done.

I’ve seen a  lot of Woody Allen films over the years and this one is one of the best. I loved all the characters that Owen Wilson’s Gil ran into throughout the story. Owen plays a writer in Paris with his fiance. At the stroke of midnight, he’s transported to 1920s Paris and he meets Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein as well as Salvador Dali. Adrien Brody plays Dali and  he steals, steals, steals his scene. So over the top, so what you’d think Dali was like.  The entire movie is peppered with great artists and writers that Gil runs into. It’s great fun.  And oh, yeah, the president of France’s wife, Carla Bruni, has a role as it in a tour guide.

Owen Wilson did an excellent job playing the every-man that Woody Allen usually plays in his films. Sometimes, I could imagine Woody was playing the role such was the channeling of the director that was going on.  I loved this film. It made my soul sing and I hope you’ll go see it. It was a nice, serene movie and had a wonderful message in it.

Almost all of us have heard the word misogyny and know it means a hatred or strong dislike of women. I have run into this more than I can tell you in my career as a lawyer- more so in the early days when we women lawyers were pretty rare.  When I left law school, there were still 2.5 men to every woman that graduated. Things have gotten better over the years and I’m glad to be able to say that.  There are, sadly, still some old school fellows out there that act dismissive- til I whip their  butt in court, that is!  LOL!

I pride myself on being a wordsmith but have to confess that the word philogynist was new to me when I heard it. It means the opposite of misogynist- it is a person who likes or admires women. I have a good friend that is the dictionary definition of this word. He’s loves women and when you talk to him, you’re very aware of it. He’s interested in all you have to say, he makes eye contact at all times and he’s very tactile.  He’s just so cute and fun and is the first to tell you that he loves women. He’s been married to his high school sweetheart for a very long time and they have six kids.  She’s lucky to have him and  he’s lucky that she knows he’s never gonna cheat on her even as much as he loves woman.
