Friday Fact- April 15, 2012- Easter Blog Hop

Faberge egg with surprise inside

I’m participating in the Easter Blog Hop sponsored by JoJos Book Corner and since it’s related to Easter, I wanted to use the Faberge Egg tradition as my Friday Fact. The Faberge jewlery firm was founded in the 1840s. Peter Carl Faberge took over from his father. The Tsar came to him one year and asked him to design a gift for his wife for Easter. He wanted a jeweled egg with a surprise inside. This began a royal tradition that lasted until the Bolsheviks came along.

I had the thrill a number of years ago to visit a traveling exhibit of the Faberge collection in New Orleans. It was stunning. The eggs were gorgeous and even the cigarette cases and hair brushes designed by Faberge were exquisite. If you ever get the chance to go, don’t hesitate.

For my giveaway on the blog hop, I’m giving one commenter a digital version of each of my books that are currently available – Solo Honeymoon and Surfer Bride. I’m also giving a second commenter (US only) a magnet for Surfer Bride and a magnet for my July release, Redemption for the Devil. Just leave a comment telling me your favorite Easter surprise or Easter candy to be entered to win.

The Amazing, Wonderful Ciara Knight

I found Ciara’s blog through my friends, Lynn Rush and Danica Avet.  Ciara is a wonderful, charming lady and she has some great content on her website and blog and I’m not just saying that because of what she has there today. LOL!  One thing she features is once a week she finds a book that attracts her and posts it on her blog. She then tweets it (and so do her followers) to see if the author finds it and her website. It’s such a fun and neat idea. A cool way to get potential new followers as well.

Ciara recently sold her YA book to Turquoise Morning Press. It’s called Rise From Darkness. I’m very excited for her.  I hope to get to meet her at RWA Nationals this year. This last week and a half, she’s been participating in the Alphabet blog challenge and today is “J” day. I was thrilled when she asked me if she could use me as her “J” word. How fun is that?  Check out her blog and yours truly today. AND I hope you’ll become a follower of her great blog if you aren’t already.  http://www.ciaraknight.com/

Here’s A New Word I Bet Ya Didn’t Know

I consider myself (and so do many local judges) a wordsmith. I love words and have quite a mass of them in my head! LOL!  Here’s a new one for me today: Deuteragonist.  How’s that for a mouthful?  It means the person second in importance to the protagonist in a drama.  It comes from the Greek- I guess we could have figured it out since  dio, dos, deaux, etc mean two and the second part  “agonist” is the same in protagonist (which is also Greek and means ‘actor’) which is the person that the story is about.  Interesting word. Gonna have to slide it into some cocktail party conversation.  Soon.

That Pesky Word “Never”

Let’s chat a bit about that pesky word “Never”-  I’m not a fan of the word. It’s such a harsh word and there are really only a few times that it’s even appropriate to use. There are not many things that “never” happen or “never” occur. Even a particular statement that I’ve probably made a hundred times could actually turn out not to be true. I don’t like hot dogs. Abhor them, hate them, can’t abide the taste of them. Many times, I’ve said, “I’ll never eat a hot dog.” Or “Hot dogs will never pass these lips.”  Well, the truth of the matter is, if I was dying of starvation (literally- not just hungry),  and a hot dog was all that was available, I would most likely eat it. I know we’ve all heard of the Donner party in the 1840s in California. They got stuck on their trek across the mountains for the winter and many died. The survivors ate the dead to stay alive. I can betcha that before they set off, they would have said they would “never” eat a fellow human being.

So, you may be asking, what has got Jillian in a storm over this word, this week?  I’ll tell you. It’s this whole obsession with the word “never” in the fiction world. It gripes my soul when contest judges/editors/or even readers make statements that something in a book would “never” happen. First, of all, the world that is created is FICTION, baby! And second, even if the story is historical, some artistic license CAN be taken (other than, for example, having your Regency heroine in a red convertible BMW sports car instead of a barouche).  The really funny thing to me sometimes is the very thing that someone may say would “never” happen, may be the very thing that is either autobiographical in the story or that actually did happen to someone the writer knows.

Several years ago, I was in NYC walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and saw a guy from high school coming toward me. I hadn’t seen the guy in 25 years, yet here he was on the Brooklyn Bridge at the same time as me, many miles from the Florida town where I knew him all those years prior. That was weird, but I can bet if I put that in a book, someone would say that would “never” happen.  One of my friends, Romancemama, ran into the man that performed her sister in law’s wedding- on the street in JERUSALEM.  Bet she’d get that “never” word if she slid that in a story.

In short, to quote Sean Connery when he said he’d never play James Bond again and then came back to play the character in Never Say Never Again, “I’ll never say never again.” They actually named the movie that because of him.

So, promise me, dear readers of this blog, to endeavor not to attach the word “never” to someone’s work of fiction.

Friday Facts- April 8, 2011- Coco Chanel

Coco- sassy and stylish! I love it!

Today, I feel compelled to talk about Coco Chanel.  She was born in 1883 in France and her birth name was Gabrielle Chanel. She was raised  in an orphanage after the death of her mother as her father couldn’t take care of  her. The orphanage was run by nuns and Coco was raised as a strict Catholic and the nuns taught her to sew.

Gabrielle left the orphanage and changed her name to Coco.  This was the name she took when she became a singer in a nightclub before she started to sew for a living. Some suppose her new name came from one of the songs she sang in the lounge but she herself was quoted as saying it came from the word “cocotte”- a word that means “kept woman”- she shortened it to Coco. She was indeed a kept woman by the time she was twenty years old. She never married and had numerous affairs throughout her life, even with the Duke of Westminster and Igor Stravinsky. She was also involved with a German officer during the occupation of France in World War II.   She was a sassy, savvy business woman and I love that she was raised by nuns yet didn’t act like one herself.

Who Doesn’t Love the Underdog?

By L. K. Below

I’d like to start of this post by saying thank you to Jillian for hosting me. Today I’m going to be talking about my newest release, Cinnamon and Spice.

This contemporary romance short story has a hero very dear to my heart. Jack, you see, is an underdog. He’s a bit of a nerd, one of those quiet guys who rarely gets the girl they want.

I’ve known guys like this. I’ve been friends with them, and yes, I’ve dated them. Personally, I’ve always hated to see these guys finish last. I’m sure you know one or two of the sort of guys I’m talking about. A little nerdy, a lot shy, and just never seem to be in the right place at the right time to be lucky in love.

Well, Jack is like this. He’s had his eye on Melissa for months. As they work in the same office building, he’s had the time to get to know her…as least as well as she’s let him. He’s asked her out before, but she’s always turned him down. Because in her mind, he just isn’t her type.

Well, I certainly took a lot of pleasure in writing Cinnamon and Spice, and in proving to her that Jack is, in fact, just about perfect for her. You know that saying, nice guys finish last? In this case, at least, he managed to finish first.

If you’d like to learn more about the book, please visit: www.breathlesspress.com/erotic/cinnamon-and-spice.html. You can find me online at www.lbelow.net or http://lbelow.blogspot.com. Thank you again to Jillian for hosting me. It’s been a pleasure!

Cinnamon and Spice

Jack is smart. Jack is charming. Jack is persistent.

But Melissa is dead certain that he isn’t the guy for her. In a moment of weakness caused by his shiver-inducing voice, Melissa finally agrees to one date. She shows up on his doorstep determined to get it over and done with, but Jack has something different planned. With a home-cooked meal, wine, and cinnamon-scented candles, can he break down Melissa’s resolve?

Can he steal her heart?

Storms and Guest This Week

Yesterday it was in the mid-high 70s here. I wore flip flops as all I had on the agenda for work was a phone conference with a judge and office work to do. The weather was breezy and nice. By the end of the day, it was overcast and cloudy. It was still in the 70s, though. A huge storm blew through about 10 pm. It came through Mississippi and Alabama first and the Mobile television channel was showing all the lightning strikes on the radar and it was crazy insane! Yep, that’s redundant but man, it’s appropriate!  LOL!  My bedroom was lit up half the night with lightning. The winds were almost as bad as a hurricane- Not as intense, I think, but as loud and scary sounding.  This morning when I got up, it was 43 degrees with a wind chill of 39. As I write this, it’s still only 48 w/wind chill of 43.  I have on a sweater and boots.  So, from short sleeves and flip flops yesterday to sweater and boots today.  Life on the Gulf Coast is never dull.

I have a special guest on Thursday this week, Lindsay Below. She has a new release on Friday and will be here to chat about that.  Check out her website in the meantime.  I think you’ll like her.  http://www.lbelow.net/index.htm
