Dario and Emma Hijack a Blog

Ciao, Bella, I’m Dario De Luca and I’ve taken over Jillian’s  blog today to tell you about the book she wrote that releases tomorrow from SirenBookStrand. The name of the book is Solo Honeymoon. Don’t be fooled by the title, it’s really a story about an Italian man who happens to be a Conti (Count to  you Americans). He’s quite the dancer. He has a passione for ballroom dances. And the story is not about his honeymoon. Not at all.

Good God, Dario, everyone knows this story is about me, Emma Chauncey.  Me. The honeymoon in the title is my honeymoon, therefore, it must be a story about me, the daughter of a 1960s folk singer.  You’re showing your arrogant side. You think everything is about you, don’t you?

Of course I think that, cara, I design shoes. Women’s shoes.  Who wouldn’t want to have a man that could make them a pair of shoes to match that odd colored dress all of you have in your closet?

You do have a point there, Dario, but I still -Uh oh, here comes Jillian, quick, act innocent.

No, cara, I won’t be scared away by some writer woman. I shall post an excerpt here and then we shall get back inside the book. Come with me,  mia bella.

EXCERPT:

Dario came around to the side of the table where she stood. “I’ve taken the liberty of having dinner served to us here in the conservatory. Please be seated, and the chicken sorrentino will be served.” He pulled out her chair, and she sat.

“What’s in chicken sorrentino? I’ve never had it.”

“Its chicken, eggplant, two kinds of wine, and mushrooms.”

“It sounds divine,” she said. “Why the limes?”

“I had the chef pour some marsala in a pitcher, and I like to add lime juice to it as a aperitivo. Would you like to try it?”

“Sure.”

He took a knife from the table and cut the limes open. As he squeezed the limes and smiled at her, she felt her insides melt at the intensity of his stare. His dark brown eyes were bottomless, and she knew she could lose herself in them and never want to come up for air. His hands were strong and capable as they pulverized the limes, and she blushed to think what those hands could do to her body.

“How do you say it…‘a penny for your thoughts,’ Emma?” he asked.

“I have no thoughts.”

He laughed. “So, you’re just sitting there watching me and your mind is blank?”

“Of course not. It’s just that I’m really just relaxing and have no specific thoughts.”

“Sure, cara, sure.” He smiled again at her.

Thankfully, the young man that had brought Emma the note earlier brought in the plates of food at that very moment, and she was spared having to come up with a plausible story of what she had been thinking.

Wonder what he would say if I told him I was thinking of those big strong hands squeezing my…

Emma, are you all right?” Dario asked, interrupting her thoughts.

“Fine. Fine,” she replied as she picked up her fork and took a bite of the chicken.

The food was delicious, and Dario seemed to be on a charm offensive with her as he told her stories of his childhood days with Vincente and their adventures at the estate when they were on holiday from school.

Once the plates had been cleared, Dario stood. “I’ve brought in an old Victrola and would love for you to dance with me. We didn’t get a chance at the town party, and as dancing is my passion, I’d like to share it with you. Will you?” He stood and took off his dinner jacket. The white dress shirt he had on clung to his body. He held his hand out to her, and she rose from her chair and took his hand in her own.

They walked over to the Victrola, and Dario picked out a Viennese waltz by Strauss and put it on the turntable to play. As the scratchy sounds came from the machine, he held out his arms to Emma, and she moved into his dance space, and they began the first steps of the waltz. As soon as Dario touched her back, he stopped short. He spun her around to face away from him.

“Nice dress, Emma. I’m glad your seamstress ran out of fabric and couldn’t finish the back.”

“Very funny, Signore Conti.” She shuddered at his touch.

“Come here, woman,” he said in a low voice as he pulled her to him again.

They danced until the song ended. After the song ended, they stared into each others eyes and kept dancing as Dario hummed until the candles sputtered and went out. At some point, Dario’s hand on her back changed from the waltz position to a caress. She pulled herself closer to him as his hand ran up and down her back and eventually inside the fabric of the dress around to the side of her breast. As soon as his fingers touched her breast, she stopped moving. He stopped as well and, as his thumb inside her dress thrummed her nipple, he bent and kissed her. She groaned, and he said, “Will you go alone again to your bed tonight, bella mia?”

“No. I don’t think so, but I don’t think I can move right now to go anywhere.”

“No matter, bella, I’m not sure I can either. My passione is inflamed for you.”

“I know.”

He smiled. “You noticed?”

“Of course.”

Blue Moon

“Blue Moon, you left me standing alone, without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own”- this song was written by Rodgers and Hart- dynamic song writing duo. They wrote it in 1934.

You may ask why I have that song in my head today. It’s because today is a blue moon day.  When a month has two full moons, the second one is called a blue moon. Thus the saying, “once in a blue moon.”  It’s rare- happens once every two or so years. Except this time around, the last one was December of 2009, so not quite a year.

I’ll be taking an early morning drive in the morning (pre-dawn) so this moon will help light my way.  I love  moon lore. Such fun!

Friday Facts- November 19, 2010- Basil Rathbone, the Spy

I adore, adore, adore Basil Rathbone. He was the ubiquitious Sherlock Holmes. I loved those old movies and used to stay up until 3 am to catch them on television in the days before VHS tapes.  He was a great actor. He played a lot of villains in his career as well. He was a master fencer and that skill was used in a lot of his films. The funny thing about that was since he was usually the bad guy, he lost the on screen duel. In fact, he only won one on film. He won when he played Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet.

In real life, he was the son of a British man and woman and they lived in South Africa until Basil’s father was chased out of the country as a British spy during the Boer War. This is truly amazing because during WWI, Basil was an intelligence officer; perhaps following in dear old dad’s footsteps. Basil had a knack for disguises (not unlike the Sherlock Holmes character he’d play in the future). On on occasion, he disguised himself as a tree (!) and brought back some good information as well as some prisoners. This was an unusual mission as it occurred in daylight hours.  A very brave man indeed.  He was awarded the Military Cross- an award for gallantry during active operations against the enemy.   I like that- gallantry! This man was quite gallant.

By the way, come by and see me today – I’m visiting Naughty Author Chicks. http://naughtyauthorchicks.blogspot.com/

Fortune-Telling Book of Names

Last year, at an Anthropologie store, I bought a book entitled Fortune-Telling Book of Names. The reason I got it was that I’m always looking for names and their meanings for my stories. This book had a different twist on names- like a fortune cookie for names.  I set this book aside and came across it the other day as I was purging some stuff.

If you read this blog, you  know that the heroine in my current WIP was being really a pain about the original name I gave her. After a brain storming session, I changed her name to Joanna and the story started to flow.  So, when I found this book, I looked up Joanna.  Imagine my surprise when I read the entry:  Joanna: (English) a brief period of chaos and uncertainty will be followed by a long period of peace.

Well, as they say here in the South, shut my mouth! This is why she needed to be named Joanna. Without giving away a plot point, as they say in Britain (and this heroine is British), this is spot on.  Spot on to my plot.  How cool is that? (in the legal world, we would say this case is on all fours with the case at hand-LOL).

Now as to Sebastian, his is not as spot on but it works with the story as well: Sebastian: (Latin) Stay the course.  You are on the right track; success is at hand.

This is awesome and I love it. Maybe next time I start a WIP, I’ll remember I have this book and look at it first- save myself some fights with uncooperative heroines.

Friday Fact- November 12, 2010- Cafe Du Monde

When I first started Friday Facts, I talked about a favorite restaurant in the Pensacola area for your characters to dine if you set a story  here. I’m returning to the restaurant theme today with a look at Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans. My friend, Romancemama went there for Veteran’s Day and it reminded me that I used this very place in one of my stories.  My hero and heroine in Runaway eat breakfast here after staying at the Roosevelt Hotel on Baronne Street (a post in and of itself).

If you’ve never been to Cafe Du Monde, you’ve never almost asphyxiated on powdered sugar.  The stuff is everywhere. In the air, on the floor, all over the tables and in your lungs as soon as you get inside. Take your last deep breath and enter the world of sugar.  The beignets are divine- very hot!  They will burn your fingers and believe me, hot sugar can be painful.  But dang, the taste is so worth it.

The coffee is not for the likes of me. It’s chicory coffee and I swear, I’ve had a cup walk out  of Cafe Du Monde and across the street to Jackson Square beside me. I think it even walked faster than me.  I’m not a fan of strong coffee and this stuff will knock your head off.  Many people love it but I just am a big ole wimp. I like a 1/2 shot of coffee and the rest milk. In other words, wave the coffee over my glass of milk and move on.

Go to Cafe Du Monde if you are ever in New Orleans. You’ll love it. If you choke on the sugar air and die, you’ll die happy!  laissez bon temps rouler (Let the good times roll)!
