I am 400 words from 80,000 in the manuscript I’m making longer per requests – I have 7 more chapters to edit. I feel like the little engine- “I think I can, I think I can.”

Preview of WW
Tricked ya! Not really gonna share Wordless Wednesday yet- I am gonna tell you where I took the picture, though. I travel to Tallahassee once a month for the day job and I had to pull over on Interstate 10 yesterday to get the shot. It’s really a good one. AND I risked my life for this blog- an 18 wheeler breezed past me so close and so fast when I was getting the shot, my skirt threatened to pull a Marilyn Monroe! Since tomorrow is supposed to be wordless, I had to share the words today- and yeah, I know it’s cheating. So sue me- I know a good lawyer!!!

No Internet Makes Me Work Harder
Got up on Saturday morning with the knowledge it was my day to monitor pending comments on my group blog (see here: http://southernsizzleromance.wordpress.com/ ) since we had a guest blogger. When we get a guest on the blog, we get a lot of first time commenters. When that happens, someone has to go in and approve the comments. I know I have to check that all the time. Well, imagine my chagrin when I got up to no internet. It was very odd. We have 5 computers in the house and they all had a green light saying they were hooked into the linksys. But nothing would come on. I rebooted the desktop three times and still nothing. Brilliant spouse comes in and picks up the telephone to make a call and discovers NO phone service. AHH. Explanation- it never dawned on me to check the phone line. DUH!
So, he calls the phone co on his cell and they say the phone will be fixed by 8/27. I asked him, “8:27 p.m?” His response? “No – 8/27/2010. The date.” “Uh- no phone for 6 DAYS???” Really? I was SURE they weren’t gonna credit my bill for 6 days of no service. Spouse called again a few hours later and they said 8/24/10 that time. Wild- and I still had to check those dang comments. Stress. But then I decided, heck- get to work on those edits you wanted to do- At RWA Pro Retreat, I won a critique from Harlequin Blaze and I wanted to get that sent out this week so I started to work on those.
I told my sons that the one good thing about no phone was we weren’t getting the political calls that have been inundating us – we have primary elections here Tuesday and it has been crazy with the calls. # 2 son said our house was like living in the early 1990s- pre internet. Since he was born in 1994, don’t know how he could make that analogy, but that’s another story for another day.
Later in the day, after I made arrangements to get to a hot spot to check the comments, I got a call on my cell phone (since the home line was making funky noises) from my dad. He farms on a piece of property near my house and he’d gotten a call from the owner that lives out of state. It seems someone had gone off the road at 5:30 a.m. and knocked over the power pole into the house where dad farms. There was a hole in the roof- the power co had called the man and he wanted my dad to go out and check out the damage. When he got there, he saw them digging a new hole and putting up a new power pole. The telephone dude stood to the side. Telephone man complained to dad that he’d been waiting like 8 hours for the new pole to go up so he could fix the phone lines as all the phones to the East of this house were out and had been all day. Dad asked him if that included my street- yep, it did. So, once the pole was up, the guy got to work and I had a phone around 7 pm. Guess how I found out????? YEP! A political call! Shocker, I know.
So, I was back in the internet business. BUT I did get 4350 words added to latest WIP- I edited Chapters 1-4 and finished Ch 5- broke 20,000 words. It was a productive day anyway. Now, on to working on the two stories that I have re-write requests/requests from three editors and an agent. Wish me luck.

Friday Facts- August 20, 2010- Mercury in Retrograde
Not really sure if this qualifies as a Friday Fact but I do know that I have been personally affected by Mercury in retrograde- unbeknownst to me at the time until I had a friend explain all the craziness I experienced last December as a retrograde issue. Never was one to believe much in astrology til then.
Normally, the planet Mercury has three retrograde periods in a year. This year, we are lucky enough (insert sarcasm here) to have four periods of retrograde- two of them are in my birth sign which I believe intensifies the effect. Mercury usually follows an orbital pattern the same as the earth but periodically, it appears to be moving backwards (all planets do this)- this is called retrograde. Mercury is the planet that governs thinking and perception as well as communication. Mercury rules people who work in these kinds of fields- perfect for me (NOT) as a lawyer as well as a writer.
When Mercury is in retrograde miscommunications and misunderstandings occur. There are also issues with electronic devices such as phones and computers. It’s not good to make big decisions when Mercury is retrograde due to these confusions. When Mercury is forward moving, our minds are clearer and more focused.
This time around Mercury is retrograde from August 20 to Sept 12. The last time was in April/May and boy, did some wonky things happen then. I had to call in security to my hearings at the courthouse twice. People were wacky and irate. It seemed no one was listening to anyone else. It was a rough time. I tried to blame it on the moon phase but as soon as I heard about Mercury back in retrograde, I remembered the December chaos and knew that was the problem.
Don’t know about you, but I’m gonna be extra sure I communicate clearly – think before I speak- between now and September 12. AND I plan to stick close to the U.S. Marshal Service when I’m at the courthouse- this time around, they have more cameras on me!

Ghost Shadow Part II
I finished Ghost Shadow by Heather Graham Tuesday night. It was quite good and very evocative of Key West. I liked the premise of the book as well as the hero and heroine. Hate to say it though, I had it figured out pretty early in the game. Of course, I am the girl that read Agatha Christie novels as a kid and could figure out who did it in about 28 pages. I used to read them and write down the solution and the page I was on when I solved it. My sister would then read the same book and once she was done, she’d read my solution and be floored that I was usually spot on in the whodunit. Solving puzzles and mysteries have always been my thing.
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it – am planning to grab the other two in the trilogy as well.

Interesting Email
In my day job, I’m an attorney and I just got an email and in the header line it said: “Ethics of Solicitation”- of course, the pervert/romance writer/silly girl in me said, “hmmm, wonder what’s up with that?” as I raised my eyebrows suggestively. I clicked on the email and dang if it wasn’t a seminar for attorneys on the ins and outs of pursuing clients. Alas, dull, boring lawyer junk. My mind is a much more fun place to be!

What I am Reading
Just recently started reading the Heather Graham book entitled Ghost Shadow. This is the first in a series released this July, August and September. So far, I’m enjoying it. It occurs in the crazy, wild world of Key West- a character in and of itself. I’ll let ya know if I think it is worth getting the next ones in the series. Soon. Stayed tuned.

Friday Facts- August 13- Triskaidekaphobia
Triskaidekaphobia is the fear ofthe number 13 and paraskevidekatriaphobia (say that three times fast) is fear of Friday the Thirteenth. I figured that since today was such a day that I’d share one or two or three of the origins of the superstition of these days in the calendar. One of the theories is that because Judas was the 13th disciple to arrive at the last supper and betrayed Jesus, that the number is unlucky. Another theory is that 12 witches in Roman times make a coven and the 13th would be the devil. There is also a Norse myth where 12 gods were having dinner and the 13th guest walked in, uninvited- it was Loki – the god of mischief- he arranged for one of the gods to shoot the god of happiness and joy with an arrow tipped in poison- that god died and the whole Earth was dark and mourned for the loss. Based on the Last Supper and the Norse Myth, there is a corresponding superstition that if you have 13 at a dinner party, one will die (that sounds like an Agatha Cristie novel to me).
My pet theory has to do with the Knight’s Templar. There is a theory that the King of France, on October 13, 1307, ordered that all the Knights Templar be arrested and executed. It was a Friday- this is one of the only theories I know that actually says the day of Friday- most of the rest of the theories deal with the number, not the day of the week. Jesus was crucified on a Friday but the last supper where Judas was guest number 13 was a Thursday.
The Knights Templar were originally formed to protect to protect Christians on Crusade but they became wealthy and powerful and the King wanted to strip them of their wealth and power. Some of them were warned ahead of time and escaped. This theory is my favorite for personal reasons. Here is the shield of the Knights Templar:
In hoc signo vinces means In this sign, victory- it is the motto of the Knights. You may see the initials IHS on various vestments and altar decorations in churches and it means “in this sign” – it was used by early Christians as a way to not be discovered, similar to the fish drawn in the sand. It referred to the Sign of the Cross.
A picture of a Knight Templar:
Note the Cross on his robe.
Now, go out and tempt fate: Invite 13 people to eat dinner.
Or if you have triskaidekaphobia, here are some cures from folklore: climb to the top of a mountain or tall building and burn all your socks with holes (I recommend the mountain over the building as you don’t want to set off a fire alarm and have the bad luck of going to jail). Another cure is to stand on your head and eat a piece of gristle (and not choke to death??- yeah, right).
Anyway, enjoy your Friday the 13th and I’ll “see” you in my next post if a broken mirror doesn’t fall on your black cat!
