Long day but good plotting

Had to go to Tallahassee today for the day job. Left home at 4:45 a.m.  Tuned into my soundtrack for my manuscript, Surfer Bride, and made some progress in the old noggin with the plot. Have several ideas in my head that are begging to be put on paper (or screen as the case may be).  I have been a bit negligent on this WIP for a couple of weeks.  Went on vacation and it has been hard to get the groove back but today’s brain time helped.  I’ll be getting these ideas down tonight and hopefully, it will re-spark me into finishing this story.

Here is the inspiration for my hero.  I love this guy and I asked a friend one day why he always played a bad guy. We decided he was hero  material. I said that someone should write him a story where he could be the hero- she said, “you do it.”  So, I am.  He is an ATF agent in this story.   AND he is yummy!

Silent Truth

Read this one yesterday. It is part of a series by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love.  The hero in this story is Hunter and the heroine is Abbie. I was glad to see Hunter had some redeeming qualities and to learn his back story. He was someone I didn’t care for before this book.  I liked the story line. It was interesting and unique and related to rare blood.

I am digging the arc the entire series is taking. I foresee a great denouement coming and I, for one, am really looking forward to the downfall of a particular character.  I am also hopeful for another character to get what she deserves in a good way.  This is an intriguing series and I recommend it.

I have a prediction on who the next protagonist will be but I’m keeping it under my hat for now so as to not inadvertently ruin Silent Truth for someone reading this blog.

I DO have to say, though, my favorite hero in the series so far is Carlos from Whispered Lies.  The other heroes are great but Carlos is awesome and he  floats my boat.  Read them all and tell me who’s your particular favorite.

Friday Facts- World Cup edition- June 25, 2010

The World Cup happens every four years.  I have a kid that played high school soccer so we have been a soccer following family for a number of years.  The USA has not done well historically in the World Cup. Being first in our division this time around was the first time since 1930 (the beginning of the World Cup).  There were a number of years that we did not even qualify to be in the thing at all.  I am hopeful that the success of this team and the fact that children are playing more soccer in their city leagues now means that soccer is on an upswing in this country. I have always been a hockey fan and soccer is just hockey on grass.

My son is so excited about Landon Donovan’s last second goal in Wednesday’s game (the goal that let us move on to the next level) that he plans to name his first son after him. Not sure how the girlfriend feels about that but he says she can  name the next kid.  They are not even engaged and he already is telling her what she has to name her kid.

The World Cup started in 1930 and has been staged every four years since then except for 1942 and 1946 because of WWII.  There are preliminary games held over the three years between the games to determine who qualifies for the actual tournament.  From the 3 years of preliminary games,  32 teams from around the world are chosen to play in the finals.

In the history of the Cup, Brazil has the record for most wins with five championships.  This year’s tournament has been really wild and unpredictable. The French and Italians played the championship match in 2006 – Italy won- that was a wild game.  The one French guy head butted an Italian and got a red card near the end.  Both these teams are out this time around very quickly.  I believe some of the teams got a little cocky this time around and didn’t take the lower seeded teams seriously and they got smacked down because of it.

The tournament lasts for a month.  This one ends July 11, 2010.  Brazil will be the host nation in 2014.   USA plays Ghana next on Saturday, the 26th.

A red card puts a player out of the game. A yellow card is a warning.  Depends on the level of the foul. The ref carries one card of each color in each pocket. You will see him whip it out periodically.

New Story Plan

Am planning a new short story with a Jungle theme.  Here are my inspiration pictures.  The story will start on the beach and move to the jungles of Costa Rica. It will be a love story with a suspense element.  It will feature a herpetologist.  It will probably be published under my real name but we’ll see.

Rejection

Got rejected by Deb Werksman on Runaway.  Here is what she said,

“Enjoyed reading what you sent and especially liked the international scope of the story but it is too short at 70,000 words to sufficiently develop the single title romance novel we produce.”

So, even though she rejected it, I am encouraged that she enjoyed it. All I have to do is add more words.  Where I’m gonna find more words, I don’t know, but I will mull it over and do something. AND then send it out again.

Coney Island

I was in New  York last week with the spouse and two sons.  We made the trek out to Coney Island and stopped at Nathan’s Hot Dog stand. (No, not me- hot dogs don’t pass these lips). They had their countdown clock going, counting down the days til the 4th of July when they have their hot dog eating contest.  The same dude has won the last three years, eating over 60 dogs in 15 minutes.  YIKES!

It was such a beautiful day.  I took this picture of the boardwalk. You can see where they are restoring the planking.  The darker wood is the newest part. I like the juxtaposition of the boards.  Makes my “artist eye”  happy.  The sky was such a perfect azure color and the clouds were puffy and white.  AND the best part for this Florida girl, NO humidity!

They have lots of rides at Coney Island. My #2 son, who is 16, refused to ride because he said that if they already had an ambulance on hand, he wasn’t about to get on a ride that the owners know is so unsafe that they have the medics on hand.  Always logical, that kid.

Of course, my thought was that it was the hot dogs that may not be safe to eat!

Friday Facts: Capuchin Monks

I am in New York City this week with my family and we are staying at a hotel right across the street from Madison  Square Gardens.  On a side street (31st to be exact) is a church and friary.

The first time we passed it, I told my sons that the word cappuchino came from the Capuchin Monks.  They both cracked up and didn’t believe me. They said that sounded  just like me. Like something I would make up since I’ve always made up stuff to tell them. I’ve always told them stories and so sometimes it is hard to make them believe me when I’m telling the truth. This time I was telling the truth.

The Capuchin Monks are an offshoot of the Francisans. They believe in living  much like hermits- in the way that St. Francis envisioned. They were forced into hiding in their early days because the Church authorities accused them of shirking their church duties. They took refuge with  an Italian Order. They adopted the style of dress of the Italian monks and took on the brown habit with hood. Many of them wore beards and had the tonsured head. The hood they wore was called a capucchio. The look of the brown hood and tonsured head is where the word cappuchino comes into play.  I am really not quite sure how people made that analogy because it seems odd to me. But there you have it.  There are also monkeys called Capuchin Monkeys that have taken their name from these monks.  Check out the cappuchino and the capuchin monkey and tell me what ya think.  Remind you of a monk?

Join me on Sunday, June 20, when I will be guest blogging about Pensacola Florida at this blog:  http://petitfoursandhottamales.com/  Great group of ladies  blog there and I’m thrilled to be there on Sunday.

Bad Pizza

Had lunch today at Uno at the pier in Manhattan.  The pizza and I had a serious disagreement.  UGH. I’m not happy about it. Talk about a bummer.  I can’t end up in the hospital- it is kind of a family tradition in New York, for someone to get sick. Our last trip, one kid had to have an appendectomy.  I am soldiering on, hoping for the best.

Have a couple of ideas perculating in the old brain for stories. A particularly good one involves the Staten Island Ferry.   Rode it today before the pizza and I got into it.

By the way, Sunday, June 20, I am guest blogging  here: http://petitfoursandhottamales.com/    This is a great group of ladies to follow.  Check them out.
