Tuesday Tales- March 1, 2016- Hip

This week’s word is hip. I’m near the end of the vampire book so this will be the last post from it. Next week, we should have something new on hand.  Be sure to check out the other authors’ posts with this link.

In the moment she arrived at the turn, the German came around the other direction. He almost ran right into her but regained his footing and grabbed her instead.

Holding her with his arm around her neck and a gun at her head, he looked at Declan. “You think you’re so wise. Now, you stay here while I return to Berlin with the prize. There will be no following us this time.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I met this lady not too long ago on the train. She and I were stealing some kisses is all.” Declan tried to remain nonchalant. His trigger finger itched but while the man had her held so close to him, it was better to try to talk it out.

He didn’t really believe that but it was what he was taught in his training so he was willing to try it for a few moments anyway. Before he blew the chap’s head off.

“You are not a good liar, herr. I’ve determined you were pretending to be drunk earlier. I know you killed my partner. He would not have abandoned his duty.”

“Maybe I did kill him. Why don’t you let the woman go and take me on man to man?”

“I need the fraulein. I will be taking her now.” The tall German turned, moving Yana with him. As he did, Yana hit him with the side of her hip.

Declan saw her movement and in the split second that she was far enough away from the man’s side to give him a clear shot, Declan took it.

The bullet smacked into the German’s head. He fell instantly to the ground with his own gun going off as it hit the grass.

Tuesday Tales- February 16, 2016- Beat

We’re back with Tuesday Tales and this week the word is beat. I fudged a little and used beats. We’re still in my vampire story and this picks up a little after last week’s entry.  Be sure to check out the other tales here.

The gnomish man darted down the road. Declan hesitated for a few seconds. Should they follow? They were supposed to be watching the clockmaker. Could they risk leaving the old German?

“Let’s go,” Popov said.

Declan made a split decision and they hurried to catch up to the man who’d evaded him in Venice.

They moved up one road and down another for about fifteen minutes.

As they continued in their chase, it became clear to Declan that the little chap was taking them on a merry chase. Panting a little, he caught up to Popov. “Do you get the feeling we’re being distracted from something?”

“I was just thinking the same thing. Let’s get back to the clock shop.”

They turned and made their way through the town to their surveillance spot.

Once they were in place again, they tried to determine what was happening on the premises. The shutters were closed and there seemed to be no movement inside the building.

“I wonder what’s going on in there. For some reason, they wanted us gone,” Declan said.

“How did they know we were watching them?”

“I’m guessing when I spoke to the clockmaker that Schumacher’s assistant recognized me. And don’t forget, that vampire they were expecting never showed up since I vanquished him. That would’ve spiked their interest as well.”

“I guess we’re going to catch hell from old Padriac in the morning, especially if they’re planning a take over of the town for tomorrow before breakfast.”

“I’m sure we’ll survive his ire. After all, I did make it through my entire childhood without him killing me.” Declan laughed. “May as well settle in to watch a bit of nothing while we wait for Padriac and Annette to relieve us in the morning.”

“Remind me again how we ended up with the night shift.”

“That’s easy.” Declan smiled ruefully.

“Enlighten me.”

“Isn’t it obvious? I’m the incompetent little brother.”

“Oh yeah, how did I forget that important fact?” Popov raised his eyebrows.

Beats me. It’s a known fact. All over the secret services.”

Tuesday Tales- February 9, 2016-Picture Prompt

This week we have a picture prompt. There are four window pictures and we each chose one. I took the one that looks rustic. This is my pre-WWII novel with vampires. Be sure to check out the other author’s posts here.

In the woods near a small town in the Black Forest called Oberkirch, Declan hunkered down and looked through his binoculars. They’d made their way into Nazi territory from Switzerland that morning and were staking out a clockmaker’s shop. He focused the glasses on the open wood shutters of the craftsman’s workroom.

Roman Popov sat with him while Padriac and Annette got some rest in the hotel which was actually a run down pension. One that appeared to be from one of Grimm’s fairy tales. Not the good one with candies all over it either.

“See anything?” Popov asked.

“No. Other than the old man fiddling with some carved figures. I think he’s sorting them to place in more of those fancy cuckoo clocks.”

“I’d quite like one of those myself. I wonder if we’ll have some leisure time for me to get one.”

“Not from that shop. If your information is correct, he’s in deep with the Nazis.” Declan passed the binoculars to Popov. “Check for yourself.”

“You’re right. He’s not doing anything that matters to us at all. It’s cold out here and we’ve got nothing to report. What a waste of time.”

“Maybe not. Let’s wait a while longer. Maybe they meet past time for everyone to be asleep.”

“Sure, yeah. If they want to call attention to themselves, they’d be sure to meet at three in the morning. That way, everyone in town would wonder why they were out and about at that ungodly hour.”

“You must remember, the Nazis are in power so they don’t need to be secretive about their meetings.”

“Yes, but they do need to keep the general population unaware of the vampire element, do they not?” Popov set the binoculars down.
