November 1- You Know What That Means? NaNoWriMo Begins!

And so it begins. The crazy, mad dash through the month of November trying to get to a word count of 50,000 words. Some people use NaNo in a nutty way in my opinion. They don’t use contractions because She did not is one more word than she didn’t.  Ok, that may be true, but if you’re going to have to go back through that manuscript and make every one of those phrases into contractions, just do it right the first time around. Why do the work twice?

I do believe you should write without much editing the first draft- heck, that’s what I do anyway, but these wacky tricks of writing nonsense to get your word count makes no sense to me. If you are just in it for words that mean nothing except to count as words, why not type word, word, word, word 50,000 times?  I mean, really, if you’re gonna write a book, then do it. No tricks, no cheating, no fooling around.  That’s what I’m doing. Join me?

  1. Once again, I’m reminded that I’m not sneaky enough. It never occurred to me not to use contractions during NaNo. This is why I’ll never be able to lead a life of crime, or at least the life of a crime novelist.

    • HEHEHE- I have heard all kinds of “cheats” for this word count thing and I’m with you- I’d never make a life of crime. I’m also too paranoid about getting caught!

  2. One of these years I’m going to do NaNo. Last year we did a January one just for a small group. I loved it. Got soooo close and learned something about me. And what works. The style of writing for NaNo is a good one for me. So why not this year? November is a horrible month for me but this year we have a book releasing Dec. 1st and it’s a first time self publishing venture and I don’t know what I’m doing past writing the book which is done. So to get out of the stressssss I decided again this year I need to pass on NaNo

Will be thinking of all you.

    • Thanks Lavada. I did the JaNo with you all and only got a bit over 16,700 then but I was editing a book that came out with Siren in February and doing promo for it so I was happy to get what I could. I did go on and finish that one in February/March so it was a good start. Thanks for the well wishes.

  3. I won’t be nano’ing with you, but I’ll cheer you on. You go, girl! Oh, and no need to respond to my comments. Save those fingers and thoughts for the quality word count! 🙂 Good luck!

  4. I’m NaNo-ing but slow to start. Hope to get a big chunck done this weekend! Enjoy!

    • Good luck- I’m on target so far but need to hop on it this weekend, too as I’ll be gone next weekend and know I won’t get any wrtiing done.
