The origin of the phrase “jump the shark” comes from an episode of Happy Days. The phrase means that a television show has reached the end of its good ideas but is still on the air. In 1977, an episode of Happy Days had The Fonz water skiing in his leather jacket and he literally jumped over a shark. The phrase comes from that episode.
