Friday Facts- October 4, 2013- Hurricane Lilies

Since we’re over here in the panhandle of Florida awaiting tropical storm Karen, I thought I’d share this photo of a hurricane lily. These lilies bloom in the late summer after the heavy rains in August and September. They are actually part of the amaryllis family- and are poisonous. They are also called spider lilies and naked lady. The other name I love for them is surprise or magic lily since they sometimes pop up when you don’t expect them.

This happened to us at my office this week as we’ve never had one of these in the yard here but on Monday, it popped up. I asked my staff if they noticed it and they all did. We thought it was a neat thing and it made us happy that this pretty red flower would greet us after the rough/stressful weeks we’ve had around here. Well, imagine my shock when we researched what kind of flower it was and then two days later, the weather service said a hurricane/tropical storm is heading right at us. It’s a bit creepy, yeah?

But they are pretty! For more information, click here.

Went from a pleasant surprise to a rude awakening, huh?
Well, let’s hope Karen is kind.

No quite rude, LOL! Just a lil ole surprise, Tonette. It’s not going to be bad. As my son says, tropical storms are just slight breezes.

A really pretty flower. I saw Karen on the news last night. I didn’t think the NW had them but with the weather changes we’re getting some tornadoes. Scary things.

Yep. I’m more scared of tornadoes than hurricanes, Lavada. I’m far enough inland that the bulk of the hurricane effects are not too awful but I live in a place that’s prone to spin off tornadoes.

Okay, so I guess I have to stop whining about our rain here if you’ve got a breeze headed your way. πŸ™‚ That flower needs to be in a story somewhere.

Yep, the breeze she is a comin’. Yep, that flower needs a story. You can write it. Lol.

Nope. Got too many ideas I already can’t get to in my idea book. I just think this flower is the perfect villain. πŸ™‚

Yep. Good villain. For sure. We gotta squeeze it in somewhere.
