Tuesday Tales- April 26, 2021- Bones

This week’s word prompt for Tuesday Tales is Bones. I am back in my mystery story from NaNoWri Mo. I am editing it now. Since the story I’ve been sharing was released last week, I’ve moved back to this one.

Check out the other tales here

She leaned on hand on her desk. “May I ask what the letter from your grandfather said?”

“Not much. Just that he wanted you to have the house and I should respect his wishes.”

Sophronia could tell he was lying. No way would those words cause the upset he’d shown on Monday. And right this minute, his face was so flushed, he could’ve been having a stroke or something. She didn’t know him well enough to know what kind of tell he’d have if he played poker, but she did know a lot of liars turned red when they were fabricating a story.

Wanting to probe for more information, but not wanting to do so at work in case things got heated, she stepped out into dangerous territory. “How about we go for coffee later and talk a bit?” She really didn’t want to spend time with him, but she needed the truth. If a cup of coffee with a man with an anger management problem was the price she had to pay, she’d gladly pay it.

But he was too smart for her. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. I’m still angry about the whole thing and it’s best if I make myself scarce in your life.” He shook his head. “Not that I’m a danger to you, but it’s best for both of us that we keep our distance.”

Glad that his self-awareness was high, Sophronia was still disappointed. She was convinced that letter held information she needed to have. How she was so positive about that was a mystery, but she felt it in her bones.

“All right. I’ll accept that, but if you decide you want to talk or share anything about your grandfather, I’ll be glad to meet you and listen.”

Sadly, he walked out of her office and the store. She watched his back until he was out of sight.

  1. Now you’ve got me as eager as she is to know what’s in the note. Well done.
