Linda McMaken Pops In!

Today’s guest is Linda McMaken, a fellow author with Desert Breeze Publishing. She’s a sweetheart. I got to meet her and hang around a bit with her at Romantic Times Convention in April in Chicago. I think you’ll love her as much as I do. She has a new release which is book two in a three book series. This one is called Baer Necessities. She’s sharing a blurb and excerpt with us today. She’s also running a contest on her blog that you may want to check out. While you’re in a checking mood, also check out the awesome boots on her cover!

Blurb:
Baer Necessities – Book Two of The Three Baers

One of them will be just right.

Connor Baer left the ranch to see the world.
Jessie McIvey wasn’t far behind.
He wanted no part of small town life, and she didn’t want a cowboy in her future.

But sometimes the thing your heart wants the most, you’ve had all along. Two people left one small town to find what their hearts were searching for only to find everything they’d ever wanted right in their own backyard.

Sometimes you get to keep your boots,
Sometimes you got nothing left but your spurs,
And sometimes neither one is as important as staying true to your soul

Excerpt:
EXCERPT:

Cowboys! What did he think she was, a roping calf? If he hadn’t held her hands, she would have made his family jewels sing for mercy. First, she is almost a deep fried human, then he straps her into a car with a seat belt that won’t unbuckle triggering a sequence of true crime stories playing in her head. When he let her loose, she would to commit a true crime on him.
Threatening her with taking pictures and putting them in the paper. Cocky, overbearing cowboy. Oak would never have done anything like that. She pulled the seat belt harder, it wouldn’t budge.
Connor flipped the wipers on high, slowing down. The Jeep treaded the water with gusto, but how would it handle the old trail on the outer reaches of the ranch? Even horses and cattle had a hard time navigating that area.
The wipers kept tempo, the rain made a calming sound on the canvas roof and the silence gave her time to think. What had Connor said before he abducted her? He was “afraid of the way he felt about her?”
Her breath caught deep in her lungs and refused to come out. She leaned forward forcing the air out. Passing out would not be attractive. The way he felt about her? Just how did he feel about her?
His amazing kisses made her orgasmic. Connor’s touch was pure sizzle and, what was she thinking?
Cowboy, ranch life! She couldn’t do it, didn’t want to do it. No. She folded her arms over her chest, trying to convince herself that she felt this way because she hadn’t had a man, a real man, kiss her like that in a long time. Who was she kidding? She’d never been kissed like that. Kissing Connor felt like all the passion in the universe landed between the two of them.
Then he had to go all ‘cowboy’ and kidnap her. Hadn’t he learned anything being off the ranch?

Friday Facts- September 14, 2012- Cathexis

Cathexis is the concentration of mental energy on one particular person, idea or object (especially to an unhealthy degree). This has been happening recently in my paralegal’s life, thus the fact of the day. She’s obsessed with a capital “O” with Alexander Skarsgard. It’s affecting every facet of her life. She needs an intervention. He’s not even cute- look at this picture!!

Don’t let her tell you that I’m the same way with Alan Rickman, tis a lie, I tell you, a lie! But, besides that, he’s at least handsome!

Friday Facts- September 7, 2012- Bridge of Sighs

Today’s Friday fact is brought to you by the hero of my new work in progress as he’s a Venetian water taxi driver.

The Bridge of Sighs is in Venice Italy and it spans the Rio di Palazzo (river of the palace). It connects the Doge’s Palace interrogation room to the prison cells. It was built in the 1600s.

Lord Byron named it the Bridge of Sighs when he was in Venice because he said the prisoners of the inquisition who were headed to their execution would be able to look out at the city of Venice one more time and sigh at its beauty. He was such a romantic. By the time the bridge was constructed, the inqusition and the summary exections were over, but it is a lovely name for an amazingly beautiful bridge.

Sadly, I didn’t get to see it in all its glory as it was under repair while I was there. The Italian authorities were kind enough to leave one side exposed, though for us tourists to enjoy.

ANNDDD, Now, the Fabulous Lavada Dee…

Jillian thanks for having me back on your blog to talk about my latest story, Choose To Love. I’m really happy with this second book in the Blackhawk Brothers series. Like the first one it hit the publisher, BookStrands, top ten list almost right away and is holding a spot.
Hi
Now to answer your excellent set of questions;

What’s the name of your new story and tell us a bit about the heroine.
Choose To Love’s heroine, Baylee Gallagher, is a successful attorney in San Francisco. She has met her career goals and now she’s ready to start a family. However a family to her means a baby, period, no husband. She considers a sperm bank until she see’s Doctor Grant Blackhawk. He’s perfect, and in her direct way she decides to just ask him to father her baby. With no prior warning she arranges to meet him.

2. I’ve read the first one and loved it, especially the hero. What are three things about this hero that we won’t read in the book that were part of your picture of him in your head as you wrote?

Wow, this is a hard question because I really hope I got what was in my head into the story. Three things I hope readers see are:
1. His strength of character. He’s strong willed but fair and when he’s wrong he admits it.

2. I hope readers see his gentle caring side. In the first book he’s there for his brother and while this story is a stand alone you see a lot of who he is in the first story.

3. I’m not sure the physical description does him justice and neither does the cover model. He has a dark brooding presence that lends itself to the surreal element he’s kept leased.

3 This new release is a part of a series. Tell us what you have in mind for the other stories and how many are left to write.

When I started the series I intended it to be a straight contemporary but Grant’s story needed more thave a mortal character and has light paranormal elements in it.

The four Blackhawk brothers each have their own story. They all start out as happy bachelors but the strong women that enter their lives change their minds.

Book #1 Nothing To Lose – Is Cooper’s story. He runs a successful construction company and has had affinity for hurt and lost animals since childhood.

Book #2 Choose To Love – Grant’s story. He’s a surgeon. The brother’s are Native American/Irish and Grant is one of the two brothers that inherit the ancient wolf totem of his ancestors.

I still have two stories to go but I’m not sure which one I’ll do next. Right now I’m leaning toward Devon’s story, which will be a straight contemporary. Devon is the brains of the family and is also movie star handsome. The fourth brother is Tyrell who is the warrior in the family and unlike Grant has embraced his inter totem since puberty.

4. The setting is important in this series. What are some geographic features that play a role?

The Blackhawk family owns hundreds of acres of land in Western Montana. Their homes are built around a semi private lake. The land is close to the wilderness area at the base of the mountains.

5. What kind of coffee do your characters drink?

Great question because this is one thing I did have in my head and doesn’t shows up in detail in the story. The brothers are rugged men. All but Devon drink strong black brewed coffee. Ummm I’m going to have to put a little mocha and latte in Devon’s story.

6. What else do you want us to know about this story that I haven’t asked?

Actually you’ve done a great job with the questions. Maybe the level of sensuality, Coopers story is spicy but Grant’s story is ramped up a notch and is one of the reasons I put in the shift changer element. When I start a story I do just that, start it. Then the characters take over and determine much of where the story goes. From the first scene in the meadow I realized Grant was more than mortal.
