A Bit of Halloween Cheer
Friday Facts- October 2, 2015- James Dean
This week, on September 30, saw the 60th anniversary of James Dean’s death. I wasn’t born when he was alive but, of course, know about his legend. He was the epitome of teenage angst back then and still has an aura of mystique about him. One of films’ great Bad Boys. He even still got thousands of fan mail letters over a year after he died.
He was 24 when he died and this year, would’ve been 84 had he lived. Can you imagine him at 84? Would he still have been a nice looking man? I think so- kind of like Sean Connery has always been a beautiful man and still is at 85.
His Porsche was named “Little Bastard” and I kind of like that he named his car since I always do that as well.
Here’s a favorite quote from him. I guess he lived this one. Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.

Friday Facts- September 25, 2015- Thales
Thales of Miletus was a Greek philosopher. One of the first of his kind back in the days before Christ. He lived from around 634 BC to 546 BC. He was one of the Seven Wise Men of Ancient Greece and was on of the first scientists as well. He predicted the first eclipse in circa 590 BC and suggested that water was what every substance in the world was made from.
In geometry, he discovered five of the theorems. He also used geometry to measure the distance from shore to ships at sea. One of the other things he did was measure the size of the Egyptian pyramids.
Thales also introduced the idea that there was an explanation for everything (psysis which is the beginning of physics). This was a huge step forward from the old beliefs that supernatural forces were the cause of events in the world and lives of men.
The coolest thing to me about Thales was that he started the concept of investing in futures. Olive oil was used back then for a great many uses. To prove that his wisdom could be useful and philosophers could make money, Thales made a deal with all the owners of the olive presses in his town of Miletus and in Chios as well. He agreed to rent them (with a discount to him for paying to rent them in advance of the need) during a certain time of the year (that Thales predicted would have a bumper crop of olives). When the olive crop came in, all the people who wanted them pressed had to pay him for the use of the presses he’d rented. He could set any price he wanted as he controlled them all. By virtue of this act, he became a wealthy man and proved that his knowledge could be useful. Pretty smart, yeah?

Friday Facts- September 18, 2015- Duke of Westminster and Coco Chanel
The second Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor, met Coco Chanel in Monte Carlo in 1925. He fell madly in love with her and since he owned all the freehold property in the Westminster area of London, he had all the lamp posts decorated with the W from his cipher and her entwined Cs of her logo. This is an awesome legend and very romantic. They were in a relationship until 1930. The duke was very generous with his lover and one legend says he once sent her an uncut emerald at the bottom of a crate of vegetables delivered to her kitchen.
The modern day city council of Westminster says it’s all untrue and that the entwined Cs are for City Counsel. They admit the W stands for Westminster. Look at the entwined Cs and tell me that it’s not Coco’s logo. It sure looks like it is. The city council is taking some of them down and replacing them with plain ones. I wonder why. They are actually very lovely.
When the Duke proposed marriage to Coco, she turned him down saying, “There have been several Duchesses of Westminster, there is only one Chanel.”

Tuesday Tales- September 15, 2015- Steel
This week’s word is steel. I’m still working on the pre-WWII paranormal story. The hero and one of the twins he’s working with have been in the woods to spy on the vampires’ meeting.
Be sure to check out the other stories here.
“You don’t get it, do you?” Declan tossed his bag over his shoulder and walked away from her.
Humiliated at having to follow behind and almost run to keep up with his long strides, she skipped alongside him. “Why aren’t we waiting for Schumacher?”
Declan stopped so abruptly she almost tripped over her feet. Taking hold of her upper arms, he said, “What part of this mission is blown do you not understand?”
“Surely he will come.” Allison wanted to poke her tongue out at the infernal man. She hadn’t messed up their mission. Why wouldn’t Schumacher come? He couldn’t know all the vampires who were meeting him were gone. Could he?
“He’s not coming.” Declan let go of her arms. “Now we’re back to square one. We don’t know where he’s going from here and where the next meeting will be.”
“And you’re mad at me.”
Declan didn’t answer. He merely kept striding ahead through the dark, back in the direction of the train station.
Allison knew she couldn’t talk him into stopping to see if the vampire they sought was on the way. He was adamant the man wasn’t going to show now. She could hear the steel in Declan’s voice as he said the words.
Deciding she wasn’t really in a position to take the train back into the city and would have to walk the long way round or find a place to wash the blood off herself, she sat.
In a few moments, Declan must have realized she wasn’t behind him. He turned and cocked his head to the side. “Aren’t you coming? It’s late. We’ll miss the last train if you don’t come on.”
“I think I’ll stay and see what happens.”
He strode back to her and knelt. “You cannot stay out here by yourself.”
“Yes, I can. You didn’t even know I was coming. You’re not responsible for me. Go on back. Make your report. I’ll make my way to my room later.”
“No. You’re here, I outrank you and I can’t leave you. Get up and come on.” He stood.
“I’m not in any condition to get on the train.”
“We don’t know how much blood actually got on you until we get under the lights. It’s hard to tell out here in the dark with only the moon to see by. Come on. If you’re too covered, we’ll make a new plan to return to the city then.” He held his hand out to assist her to her feet.
