Blurb for THE GAMBLER

Lest we forget, I have a book out on April 15, 2012- yeah, tax day. Something to think about instead of the old IRS. And lest we forget who I was thinking about as I wrote this tale, I’ve posted a couple of pictures here of the inspiration for the hero, Dirk McSwain. Mr. Jeremy Northam.

BLURB: In 1937, Dirk McSwain, known as The Gambler, makes his living on the turn of a card. When his family home is in jeopardy of being lost, he boards the Queen Mary ocean liner, playground of both royalty and the wealthy alike. He hopes to win big to save his property. He meets three beautiful, unchaperoned, Irish sisters the first day at sea and determines to deprive them of some of their fortune. What he doesn’t count on is an obnoxious passenger accusing him of cheating at cards and then dying the next morning. At the captain’s request, he teams up with one of the sisters to try to solve the mystery of the man’s death and gets more than he bargained for in the process.

New Cover

Another new cover. I know y’all think I’m cover mad but it is what it is, right? In fact, I’m working on a cover questionnaire for my June release this weekend. So, there will be another cover soon. And to think, back in October, I was fretting that I had nothing coming out in 2012. LOL!

I’m the featured writer this week on the blog called “Fifty Writers From Fifty States. I’m chatting about Florida. There’s also a giveaway. Pop in if you get a chance. http://annettesnyder.blogspot.com/

Friday Facts- February 24, 2012- Horology

I know where some of your minds went when you saw this title. But, nope, that’s not what this word means!

Horology is the science of measuring time and/or the art of making timepieces. Horologists are people who make watches and clocks or collect them. So, if you’re ever at a party and want to get a shocked look from someone, tell them you’re a horologist and wait for the gasp. LOL!

By the way, I was interviewed here: http://suzannepurvis.blogspot.com/ about writing short vs. long. Come by and keep me company.

New Publisher, New Contract

I’m excited to announce that I’ve signed a contract for a super sexy story with Secret Cravings Publishing. It’s a shapeshifter paranormal story called The Season of the Witch. The title comes from the name of the new age store the heroine owns. It’s a mystery story as well. A whodunit. Its release date is sometime in June, 2012. It’s a bit of a departure for me but as my friend Sayde Grace, who writes a lot of shifter stories and critiqued this one for me, said, “it’s a cute story that rocks.” Her words, not mine. Hehehe.

As some of you know, I love Donovan, the one-named singer from the sixties and the inspiration for this story was his song by the same name.

This is also the story I mentioned in my Friday Fact on February 3. The one that the hero’s name is Chordata and he goes by Cord. So glad he has a home.

“This Means War”

I went to see the movie, This Means War this weekend. It was okay, not spectacular, mind you. Just okay. There really wasn’t much of a story line over and above the competition over who was going to win the girl. There was a feeble little side plot about some brothers but it was really lame. There was a lot of nonsense going on and a ton of unauthorized use of CIA equipment and manpower. Those two guys needed to be fired. The heroine also had a best friend who was totally unlikeable.

In short, the best part of it was cute Reese Witherspoon and handsome, super sexy Tom Hardy. Man, I like that guy!! So, the two hours of watching him was worth my $6.50 for the matinee.

Proud momma moment- some of you may have seen this on Facebook, but if not, here’s an article about #1 son’s accomplishment. http://www.shef.ac.uk/architecture/ssoa_news

AND I’m guest blogging today here: http://ldee2010.wordpress.com/ and talking about Sebastian’s Salvation.

Friday Facts- February 17, 2012- Lupercalia

Inside Augustus Caesar's House- Rome

Lupercalia was the celebration in old Rome for fertility during the time of the Caesars. It was celebrated in February. When the Christian’s philosophy took root in the culture, they tried to incorporate the pagan holidays and that may be why February was chosen for the time to celebrate St. Valentine’s day. Even if not, it’s a romantic thought, isn’t it? There are rumors to this effect, but I for one, don’t believe them.

Special Guest- My Super Friend, Lavada Dee

Jillian: Lavada is one of my favorite people. She’s always supportive and is a true friend. She and I are on a group blog together and have a lot of fun over there exchanging tales and recipes over the backyard fence. She has a new release out with Siren Book Strand and I asked her over to share a bit about it with you all.

NOTHING TO LOSE:

Lavada:
Jillian, thank you for having me here today to talk about my new book, Nothing To Lose. I’m excited about this story and that it’s the first in a series. Pre-release sales put it on BookStrands bestseller list, a rewarding experience for me.

Blurb
When Galynn Taylor left the violent domestic relationship she was in with Mick, she knew she had nothing to lose. If she stayed, Mick would kill her, if she ran and he found her, he would kill her. And, now she finds herself on a lonely country road in the middle of an ice storm. Injured, she collapses on the side of the road and is ready to give up.
Cooper Blackhawk is coming home when he see’s a lump of clothes on the road and stops. Expecting maybe dumped garbage he is surprised when a very frightened woman tries to escape into the surrounding forest. At first he is in protective mode, but when he takes her home to help her recover it quickly escalates into more. The attraction is mutual and he wants more, but Galynn is terrified that Mick will find her and hurt, even kill Cooper or his family in trying to get to her. She can’t risk that and runs again. This time she leaves her heart, but unknowingly keeps a part of Cooper.
Excerpt
It took a few minutes to convince the woman to get in the truck, but finally they were on their way. Cooper cranked the heat to high, but she still shivered. He would bet she had a high fever, and to make matters worse, she was soaking wet. She had on a hooded sweatshirt, and it looked like he could wring water from it. Her tennis shoes and the legs of her pants were in the same condition. He hoped her backpack was waterproof and there were dry clothes inside. She would need them.
“Are you taking me to a motel?” She wasn’t slurring her words, but she shook so hard they were more of a stutter.
“No, I’m taking you to a doctor.”
Turning, the woman grabbed the door handle, forcing the door open. Cooper made a grab for her and barely kept her in the truck. “What the hell do you think you’re doing? Is this how you got hurt? Did you jump out of some guy’s truck when he tried to help you?” The door flapped open as he pulled over to the shoulder of the road. Stopping, he turned toward her. “Okay, go ahead. Get out! You’re about two hundred yards closer to town, but don’t kid yourself. You’re not going to make it.”
Cooper gripped the steering wheel as he struggled to get his breathing under control. She had scared him more than he wanted to admit. A second of hesitation on his part and she would have been lying on the road again. By the looks of her, she wasn’t going to be able to sustain many more injuries. When she didn’t get out of the truck or make any attempt to close the door, he looked over at her. She was tiny. He’d guess maybe five feet five and way too thin. If she weighed more than a hundred and ten, he’d be surprised. But even in the condition she was in, and dripping wet, she looked beautiful, with long-lashed brown eyes and dark hair. Her head was bent, and she made no move to get out of the open door. It looked like she had run out of fuel. His voice sounded husky to his ears, and he resisted the overpowering urge to pull her into his arms to comfort her. “It’s going to be okay. My brother is a doctor, and he’ll take care of you at the clinic. You might have caught a break because the clinic is closed.”
She nodded and swallowed with what looked like difficulty. Cautiously, Cooper reached across her and pulled the door shut. Pulling back on the road, he hoped she wasn’t hurt as bad as it appeared.
