Cambridge, UK

Today, I’m in Cambridge in the United Kingdom meeting up with a friend named Gill. How fun is that? I’m an American Jill and she’s a British Gill. Let’s hope the city can stand both of us there at the same time.

Another SUPER Guest, Laurie Ryan!

Jillian:  Everyone say hello to the super-awesome Laurie Ryan. She and I “met” on line as part of a yahoo group and immediately liked each other’s cyber personalities. I’m pleased to say we met in real life at the RWA conference in NYC and she still likes me!! She’s as wonderful in person as she is on line and did I say, she likes me?  LOL!

Welcome, Laurie.

Laurie:     Breakfast Casserole – Great for a holiday brunch…and for romance.

Thanks for having me here today, Jillian. I always love visiting. J

Last week, Jillian posted a picture of an Italian cannoli dessert one of her heroines loves. It looked delicious!  I thought I’d piggy-back on her idea and give you a recipe my heroine in Healing Love uses when she cooks breakfast for the hero. Okay, get your minds out of the gutter. They haven’t made love…yet. J  I particularly like this scene because my hero and heroine doctors are celebrating a successful joint effort with a patient and this is where they make that first tentative agreement to see where their relationship can go. Here’s the excerpt. And the recipe for a mout-watering, stomach-satisfying breakfast casserole is after that.

 Excerpt:

When he leaned forward, Nicole’s heart began to pound against the inside of her chest. He’s going to kiss me.

He paused a fraction of a second from her lips. She sensed no indecision. Maybe he, like her, wanted to savor this moment. To feel it unfold like a slow ripple in time.

When their lips touched, that ripple expanded until there was nothing in her world except Damien and the paradise she felt as they kissed.

This was no hot and bothered I-need-sex-now kiss. Instead, there was a sweetness, a gentle discovery to it that wove a cocoon of emotion around her heart.

When he pulled away, she could have sworn she heard a softly whispered “wow” before he sat back. She wanted to echo the sentiment. One gentle kiss and she’d fallen off the edge of a precipice. She took a deep breath, trying to slow her heartbeat.

Nicole realized she was falling for Damien Reed, something that should not be happening. It would complicate her life to no end.

“You know,” he said. “We can’t really date.”

She knew it. It wasn’t what she’d figured would be the first words out of his mouth after kissing her. Disappointed, she tried to hide it, tried to put on her poker face. There was only one problem. She’d been told again and again that she didn’t have a poker face.

“But,” Damien continued. “I’m not always going to be your boss.”

A flicker of hope brought a slow smile to her face.

He reached again for her hand. Several long moments passed as he moved his fingers across hers. Nicole enjoyed the sensation and waited.

When he spoke, it once again was not what she’d expected to hear.

“Come spend Christmas with me,” Damien said.

“Christmas?” She couldn’t switch gears that fast.

“Yes. At my home, well, my parent’s home. Come spend it with us.”

 Breakfast Casserole Recipe

 You’ll need:

1 package hash browns (in the refrigerator section at the grocery story, use O’Brien or unflavored)

1 pound sausage, cooked and drained (I do this the night before)

2 tablespoons butter

1 onion, chopped

2 teaspoons seasoning salt

1 cup shredded cheese

10 eggs, lightly beaten

salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease 13 x 9 baking dish. Melt butter in frying pan, Stir potatoes and chopped onion into pan and cook until potatoes are browned and onion is tender. Sprinkle with seasoning salt.

Spread potatoes in baking dish. Cover with sausage. Sprinkle with cheese. Pour eggs over top. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then bake for 30 minutes or until eggs are thoroughly cooked.

You can vary this casserole by the type of hash browns you use, by using bacon instead of sausage, or trying different seasoning to taste. My son-in-law likes to top his with salsa. My hero Damien, however, found the very tasty when Nicole made it this way.

Nicole and Damien’s story is part of a two-story, emotion-wrapped anthology calledHolidayMagic-The Gift of Love released with a good friend and writer I respect, Lavada Dee.

 Priceless Love by Lavada Dee

“For Richer, For Poorer.”

Taylor Hamilton, dissatisfied with a life designed by her parents, attends a friend’s fall wedding and finds small town life agrees with her. The problem is, her wealth doesn’t agree with the man she falls for. Is their love strong enough to find a bridge of trust where money isn’t an issue?

 Healing Love by Laurie Ryan

“In Sickness and in Health.”

Nicole Milbourne’s single-minded focus on a medical research career is thrown for a loop when charismatic Dr. Damien Reed shows her there’s more to life than studying diseases. Will an unexpected Christmas fill Nicole’s lonely heart and show her the healing power of love?

Guest Post- Welcome to Casey Crow

Welcome to my friend, Casey who recently had her debut release

Holiday Traditions

By: Casey Crow

Thank you, Jillian, for hosting me today. I’m a big fan of your books and love subscribing to your blog. I always learn some cool tidbit of information from you! It’s an honor to be here.

Thanks also for helping me celebrate the release of my debut CAN’T FAKE THIS.

A divorcee ready to reenter the dating world, Anna Ryan is determined to be the best “product on the market,” which requires a lot more experience so she propositions sexy police officer Chase Harris to teach her how to make hot, passionate love as opposed to just having sex. He takes it a step further, instructing each lesson based on The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Anna and Chase know what will keep them busy for the Twelve Days of Christmas. What about you? Do you have any special holiday traditions for you or your family? What’s your favorite? I love the craziness of Christmas Eve at my dad’s with all the grandkids tearing into to gifts all at once. I love the excitement of my children when they wake me up at six a.m. on Christmas morning, and I won’t let them go downstairs until I can get down there with camera in hand.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. Merry Christmas!

Friday Facts- December 16, 2011- Myrrh

Myrrh is one of the three gifts of the Magi in the story of the birth of Jesus. What exactly is Myrrh? It’s a cross between a tree and a bush and provides oil as well as resin. These are used for astringent and antiseptic purposes. The Egyptians used myrrh in mummification and the oil was also used to anoint priests. It is used for sore throats and mouth ulcers.

One interesting fact is that when myrrh is burned, it acts as a mosquito repellant. Us Floridians sure would appreciate that.

One of the myths of where myrrh came from is quite colorful. The goddess Myrrha was forced by Aphrodite to commit incest with her father. She escaped being murdered by her father after that when the gods turned her into a myrrh tree.  The drops of gum resin that form on the tree are said to be the tears of Myrrha.

The tree is kind of cool looking but the actual myrrh by-product is kind of nasty looking. Judge for yourself.

Crepuscular Animals And 500th Post Giveaway

First things first- this is my 500th post. Who knew I had so much to say? I’m giving away a $10.00 Amazon giftcard to celebrate my milestone post. Leave a comment about something new you learned this week for a chance to win.

Secondly, I got into a conversation on twitter the other day with Jeffe Kennedy- who is a wonderful, witty writer, by the way- We got into a discussion about coyotes. I confessed my fear of them. I have a friend with a cabin in North Carolina that hangs off the edge of a mountain and whenever I stay there, I get really antsy at night when the coyotes are out and howling.  I thought they were nocturnal animals and only active at night. I’ve only ever seen them from a distance and at night.

The marvelous Jeffe told me that they are crepuscular animals. This was a new one on me. I’d not heard of this before. I recognized the root word of course, because it’s Latin. Crepuscular comes from the word for twilight. So these animals are active during twilight times- early morning as the sun comes up and late afternoon as it goes down.

I told Jeffe that I was going to work the word into conversation every day this week, so be glad you don’t live near me and my obnoxious self this week!

Voice

On one of my writer loops, a new writer who was working on her very first edits had some questions about the process and we got on the topic of voice. So, today, I want to talk a little bit about voice. My writing voice is something precious to me. I think that’s probably true of most of us writers. After all, our voice is what makes each of us unique. I don’t mind if someone hates my voice because that is their right. I don’t like every writer I read and I’m quite sure that everyone who reads my work doesn’t like it. Reading and writing is super subjective. I have a sassy, irreverent style and I think that’s because that’s who I am.

I know many kind, gentle people who write inspirationals. But I also have a friend who I always want to assign her the role of an inspirational writer because she’s so quiet and sweet- then she let me read some of her work- which I adore, by the way, but she’s pretty sassy herself in her writing.  Goes to show you that we can’t always tell how someone writes by talking to them.

So, I guess the point of this post is that we all should stay true to our voice even if it’s nothing like the personality we show to the outer world and we should defend our uniqueness against all who try to make us into something we aren’t.  My advice to all writers is to defend your voice. No matter what. It is what makes your writing special and once it’s developed well, anyone will be able to tell your stories are written by you since the voice will remain the same whether it’s a contemporary, a historical or a paranormal story.

Hang tight. Always!
