Beth's Cover

Today I’m here: http://bethdcarter.blogspot.com/  talking about my hero in Surfer Bride and the real life actor that inspired him as well as my writer friend that helped me decide to make him a hero instead of a villain all the time. Poor guy always gets tapped as the  villain-  but he’s such an exquisite one, I guess he has to do it.   On Monday, Beth will be here with me talking about the Anti-hero (do you sense a kind of theme?). Be sure to come by on Monday.

Tomorrow, I have Stephanis Burkhart here along with the yummy Count Anton Varga and Friday Facts will be all about Hungary.  Hope you’ll pop in for the Count’s interview.

New Soundtrack for New WIP

I have the basics in my head for a new WIP and I’ve made the soundtrack for it.  As readers of this blog will recall, I make a soundtrack of songs that fit my nebulous idea of where my story is going (sometimes it doesn’t quite work out that way)- then I immerse myself in the songs  before I start to write.  The songs get in my subconscious and then I come up with great stuff to further the plot-  I just finished this track 2 nights ago (as I write this post- it’s the 17th) and I already have lots of ideas.

This time around, I have no names yet. I usually name my computer folder after the hero. This time I had to name it after one of the settings of this story- The ocean liner called The Queen Mary.  I’m going to stay on it for 2 nights in March (for fun and research) and I’m sure the rest of the story will gel when I take the behind the scenes and ghost tours.

Here are the songs on the soundtrack -see if you can guess where I’m going with this one:

Spooky – Atlanta Rhythm Section; I’m a Believer – The Monkees; Don’t You Care- The Buckinghams;  Gimme Back My Bullets Lynnard Skynnard; Come a Little Bit Closer Jay and the Americans; My Old School– Steely Dan; Break My Stride – Matthew Wilder; White Rabbit – Jefferson Airplane; Fever Peggy Lee;  Bad Moon Rising – Creedence Clearwater Revival; This Guy’s in Love – Herb Alpert; How Can I Fall– Breathe; House of the Rising Sun– The Animals; Telephone Line – ELO; Freedom – George Michael; Undun – The Guess Who; Barefootin’ – Johnny Rivers

Friday Facts- February 18, 2011-Uxoriousness

In honor of Valentine’s week, I chose uxoriousness as the Friday Fact this week.  Being a Latin hound and a lawyer, the word Ux comes into play on occasion.  In wills and deeds, you may sometimes see the words “et ux” – it means “and wife” so a piece of property can  be given to the donee et ux or the buyer et ux- now I know you’ll probably ask “Why the heck can’t they just say ‘and wife’?  The only answer I can give you is that lawyers are afraid if they say everything in laymen’s terms instead of our own argot, laymen may decide they don’t need us- *snort*

Uxoriousness means that a man has great fondness for his wife. Some may even say excessive submissiveness to  her- but we all know that can’t be true, right?  Anyway, there’s your word of the week- I hope all the married ladies here have  a husband that suffers from some form of uxoriousness.

Guest Spots

I’ll be guesting many places in the coming days for the run up to the release of Surfer Bride on February 22, 2011. On the 19th, I’ll be on Falyn Donaldson’s blog with my friend Sayde Grace who has a book release herself on the day after Surfer Bride. Her book is called Untamable.  We have a fun post for Falyn’s blog- we wrote a scene where our heroes and heroines meet each other on the beach.  And we’ll both be back there on the 26th with covers and excerpts. http://falyndonaldson.com/

On the 20th, I’ll be at SOS Aloha blogging about the inspiration for Surfer Bride and my Eureka moment- when I knew I wanted to publish my stories. This is an awesome blog with lots of recommended reading and author interviews. http://www.sosaloha.blogspot.com/

On the 21st, I’ll be on Darlene Henderson’s blog with one of my characters- she calls her blog Live, Love, Laugh and I’ll be giving away a Live, Love, Surf magnet. http://dandwh.wordpress.com/

On the 22nd, which is the actual release day, I’m blogging at my group blog here: http://fourfoxesonehound.wordpress.com/   The theme is supposed to be President’s Day- am working on an angle to fit in something about my release day! Maybe I’ll talk about how much George Washington would love a surf story or if Abraham Lincoln might like a chick in a bikini.

On February 23, I’ll be at Katie Reus’s blog talking about lies, secrets and danger. http://katiereus.blogspot.com/

On February 24, I’ll be on Beth Carter’s blog talking about my hero in this book and how I decided to use an incident in my own life to spark a story about a man that’s usually a villain. http://bethdcarter.blogspot.com/

On my own Southern Sizzle blog on this coming Saturday-the 19th, I’ll have a giveaway to celebrate my release. http://southernsizzleromance.wordpress.com/

Second Guest of the Week- Danica Avet

EDITED TO ADD:  Lynn Rush is the winner of the mask- congrats, Lynn!!

JILLIAN: Today, I have another Siren author as a special guest.  Danica Avet just had her first book released. It’s the first in a series of three and so it’s a wonderful beginning for her. Mais, I see great things in her future-She so funny, she’s a couillon and she gives me frissons she’s such a witty woman. She’s also giving Cajun lessons on her blog-  mais, can you tell I’ve been studying? Anyway, Welcome to my blog, cher.

DANICA: Thanks for having me here.

JILLIAN: This is your first release. Tell us about the day you got the email offering to publish Ruby’s story.  What did you do first? Who did you call first?

DANICA: The funny thing about “the call” (or e-mail) is that Ruby wasn’t the first book I submitted to Siren. The 2nd book in the series, Succubus-in-Waiting was accepted first and I later submitted Ruby as well. When I read the e-mail from the acquisitions editor saying they wanted to publish Succubus (and later Ruby), I almost cried my fool eyes out.

I was at work at the time, so it wasn’t something I could start shouting about. Instead, I grabbed my cell phone, ran to the bathroom and called my mom. Much to my dismay, I called the wrong person the first time, but finally got in touch with her. I was in the bathroom at work, jumping up and down, squeeing quietly, and about to cry. It was quite sad, but she understood. I think I grinned like an idiot the rest of the day and sometimes when I think about it, I still do, lol

JILLIAN: You have a pierced tongue. What made you decide to take that step?

DANICA: Wow, no one’s ever asked me that, lol. I don’t know what really possessed me. I always liked the way they looked and thought “why not?” So on Memorial Day weekend after college, I had it done. It’s been over 10 years now and I seriously forget it’s there until someone asks about it.

JILLIAN: Ruby has tattoos on her face. Do you have a tattoo to go with that tongue stud?

DANICA: LOL yes. I have three tattoos. My first one I got in my 3rd year of college, the second one I got at the same time as my tongue piercing, and the third was a few years ago. I’m waiting for the perfect moment to get my next one. I like to keep these kinds of things for pivotal moments in my life.

JILLIAN: You tweet about your animals a lot. Tell us about your fur face friends.

DANICA: I have a 13-year-old cat named Ty (or the Devil). She has disciplined the children in my family for the last twelve years. Not many people can touch her and she likes it that way. I like to think she’s the stripper out of the menagerie. You know, “You can look at this magnificence, but you can’t touch.”

Mia is my 9-year-old Miniature Schnauzer. She believes my lap was created for her use alone. If I’m sitting down, she’s trying to sit on me. If she can’t sit on me, she has to sit near me. She has more sleeping quirks than some humans do. Before she can sleep she has to yawn (loudly), throw herself down and kick out her hind leg (usually kicking me in the butt), then she has to smack her lips three times, and groan until she falls asleep. Yeah, it’s a production.

Then there’s Cookie. She’s about 20 months old. She’s a cat we rescued and never left. She’s the funniest cat I’ve ever had. She actually comes when you call to her, demands to have attention from us including the dog, she won’t let anyone have a moment of privacy in the bathroom because she has discovered that once you’re in there, she has your undivided attention. She’s also my box model. As in, if there’s a box in the house, she’s in it, lounging like some Playboy Bunny. If the box is sealed, she’s on top of it in the same position. She just loves her boxes.

JILLIAN: All of us that are writers have what I call cover angst. Tell us about yours and if you were happy, thrilled, or just all right with your cover.

DANICA: Actually, I was extremely pleased with my cover. The model wasn’t quite what I suggested, but she turned out better than my suggestion. The artist got the tattoos and fingerless gloves and hello! She got Ruby’s attitude as well. The hero…well, all the women in my family tell me they don’t care that he doesn’t have long hair like Lucian does in the book. Someone even asked me “He has hair?” So I guess that’s a good thing, right? Because he is very hot, lol

JILLIAN: Share 5 characteristics of Ruby.

Ruby is independent because she’s had to be.

She’s also a loner because of something that happened when she was much younger (there’s another explanation, but I’m not giving anything away!).

Ruby is stubborn as all Hell too, although she will compromise when she needs to.

She’s loyal to the people who come into her life because of the powers she’s inherited.

Oh, and of course, she’s funny. Or at least I think she is, lol

JILLIAN: How did you choose the title of this book? It’s an intriguing one.

DANICA: I think I was trying to make a play on Ruby’s name but everything else I came up with just didn’t work. I thought up Ruby: Uncut and on the Loose because she’s like a diamond (or ruby) in the rough. She’s unfinished when the book starts, but through her trials and tribulations, she becomes the woman she was always meant to be. Wow, that sounds deep, huh? I’m psychoanalyzing myself!

JILLIAN: Since you met me at National RWA conference in Orlando and know some of my weirdness, tell me if I would like to have coffee with Ruby or not and the reasons.

DANICA: Hm, possibly. Ruby in some ways is a lot like me. She has my weird sense of humor and sometimes inappropriate language (Okay, so my language is almost always inappropriate!). I know I’d love to be friends with Ruby if given half the chance. Although I’d be quite unhappy to be seen next to such a tall woman. I have height…envy.

JILLIAN: This book is your first release and this is a series. Give us a little info on the next two books- are they closely related? Just a teaser to whet our appetites.

DANICA: All three books are stand-alones, but to really understand the Veil better, I would recommend reading them in order.

Book 2 is called Succubus-in-Waiting. It should be out in April at the latest and it’s about a virgin succubus-weretiger Halfling who doesn’t want anything to do with either parts of her heritage. Her mother, a succubus, is determined to get her girl fired off and…manipulates things so she meets up with a cranky, Alpha werewolf who hates succubae.

Book 3 is called Lifestyles of the Fey and Dangerous. It should be out by May if not earlier. It’s about a shadow fairy assassin who has one last assignment to complete before she’s pressed into service of the Eturian (bad guys) Overlord. Her target is none other than a former Eturian general who has decided to turn over a new leaf and choose to work with the Veilerians against the Eturians. And he’s a hot vampire-demon Halfling and the fairy doesn’t stand a chance 😉

Special Guest- Siren Author- J Rose Allister

JILLIAN: Welcome to my blog, J Rose. I’m happy to have you here.  Before we hear about your new release, SEDUCED BY AN ANGEL, tell us a little about you and how long you’ve been writing.

J ROSE: I’ve been crafting fiction for over a dozen years now. I started off writing short mystery and horror stories. After a couple of years of selling stories to magazines and what not I decided to try full length. My first novel, VISIONS, is a psychic/romance that released in 2001. To date, only one of the eleven titles I have in publication is NOT romance or erotica.

JILLIAN: All of us that are writers have what I call cover angst. Tell us about yours and if you were happy, thrilled, or just all right with your cover.

J ROSE: Oh boy, did I ever have cover angst in spades with my first novel! In fact, I submitted my own design (I had graphics arts background). I wanted something different from the typical romance cover. The result was intriguing, but in the end I feel deviating from something more formula was a mistake.

Since then, I’ve relied on the publisher’s art department. Some of my covers thrill me to no end! Not all of them completely blew my skirt up, and one or two literally set my teeth on edge. These were some time ago, though, and I figure this bound to be the case eventually when you start releasing numerous titles. Since signing with Siren Publishing, I’ve been quite satisfied. Their designer, Jinger Heaston, is a genius. I love her work!

JILLIAN: Share 5 characteristics of your heroine.

J ROSE: 1.  Kazia is damaged goods, but you have to dig past her façade a bit to find it. On the surface, she comes off as capable, yet sarcastic. You later realize that biting humor is a survival mechanism to disguise some major fears surrounding intimacy.

2.  She has a strong work ethic. She’ll do just about anything to keep a good job when she sees it—almost. If she thinks she can get away with a little fudging when it counts, she’ll do it.

3.  Something her hero understands about Kazia better than she does about herself is that while she herself is beautiful, she subconsciously scoffs at modern ideals of beauty. She dyes her hair a bizarre shade of silver-lavender to make a statement about bucking trends, though in the end this only serves to heighten her own unique beauty.

4.  While the other potential virgin candidates are chomping at the bit for a shot at the unbelievably erotic archangel, Kazia has no interest in becoming his mate. In fact, she has no interest in losing her virginity—ever.

5.  She has been exposed to just enough supernatural secrets through her unique resort job to have a rather skewed view of angels as pure, trustworthy beings. Her experience has shown a rather carnal, selfish view of all beings at the resort, human and immortal, that makes her even less likely to welcome the idea of taking part in an archangel’s mate hunt.

JILLIAN: Share 5 characteristics of your hero.

J ROSE: 1.  If Kazia is damaged goods, Andel is the poster child for it—despite being an archangel that appears powerful and self-assured on the surface. His insecurities surrounding physical disfigurements and circumstances of his birth drive him to some pretty bizarre means of claiming the woman he craves while still holding his heart at arm’s length.

2.  As with all angels in the mythos of the IMMORTAL PARADISE series, Angel is no innocent when it comes to the notion of carnal passion, with humans or otherwise. While he might try to hide what is in his heart, what burns in his libido is tough to disguise—an angel’s skin will glow when sexually aroused. The hotter they burn for their partner, the brighter that glow.

3.  His biological clock is ticking its last tock. As the window on his fertility phase is about to close for all eternity, Andel makes a last-minute decision to father an immortal offspring. Or is it last-minute? He might not understand the force behind his yearning for procreation as well as he thinks.

4.  Andel is part of one of the lowest orders of heaven—but he does not always behave like it. There is more to the archangel than meets the eye, and while there were those who ensured his role in heaven was severely limited, his true nature cannot always be controlled, nor denied.

5.  While angels serve the throne faithfully and without question, Andel does not fully trust the realm in which he serves. His reasons are complex, and are put to the test when he seeks to take a mate for the purpose of procreation.

JILLIAN: How did you choose the title of this book?

J ROSE: The original working title for this book was actually ANGELIC SEDUCTION. Once the book was finished and I had a better understanding of the hero’s actions and motivations, I realized the title might give the wrong impression—that the seduction of his em-sehad, or chosen one, is “angelic” in the sense of being kind, good, and sweet. Not true. He is a good being, but his methods for convincing Kazia to be his are sometimes highly controversial—and, at times, downright coercive. Changing the title to SEDUCED BY AN ANGEL I think lent a better sense of the seeming contradiction between a smoldering seduction and a being that serves goodness and light.

JILLIAN: Your blurb for this book sounds awesome. Where did your idea for the plot come from?

J ROSE: This book is part of a series of events that take place more or less simultaneously on a unique, paranormal island. In each book, minor cameo characters or situations can become the central focus of their own story later. In Book 2, TROPICAL HEAT, I was writing the scene where the hero uncovers the existence of supernatural beings. One of those beings is a man with wings he assumes are strapped on and soon discovers otherwise. Later, the heroine encounters the same angel in a passionate embrace in the hallway, and the angel is glowing with desire. I was intrigued by the idea and decided that he needed his story told.

JILLIAN: If your heroine came to life, would you like to have coffee with her? Why or why not?

J ROSE: Oh, definitely. We do have a few things in common, both as working women who like to seek out the humor or irony in situations. She’d be a hoot.

JILLIAN: It’s Valentine’s Day. Any special thoughts about romance or the day itself?

J ROSE: I confess I don’t do a whole lot for Valentine’s Day because I like the idea of perpetuating romance every day, all year long. That’s probably a large part of the reason why I write romance and erotic romance! That said, a little extra “wink” of acknowledgement on February 14 certainly doesn’t hurt, and as I’m a fan of scheduled spontaneity it’s a calendar day I definitely look forward to!

JILLIAN: Which would you prefer if you could only have one for Valentine’s Day- chocolate, roses, or a massage? Why?

J ROSE: Gonna have to go with chocolate on this one. It’s quite a versatile gift, you know. It can be eaten, drunk, drizzled, licked…well, you get the idea. 😉

When an angel glows, sparks will fly…

Seven virgins are brought to a unique island to be propositioned by a sexy archangel in search of a mate. Hotel employee Kazia is mortified to learn she is one of the candidates–and that her job depends on her cooperation. Despite her misgivings, she finds herself drawn to Andel’s eroticism. But both of them have secrets that could keep him from claiming her. How can they overcome the past–and heaven itself–in order to consummate their passion?

Excerpt:

“Seraphim are immediately recognizable for a number of factors,” Andel said, “one of which is that they have more sets of wings than other heavenly beings. It also makes their glow almost impossibly bright, even among our kind. So after I was born, my mother cut some of them off.”

Kazia sucked in an audible breath. “That’s awful.” She walked toward him with a horrified expression. “I’m so sorry, Andel.”

He watched as her hand came out to caress the side of his face. He closed his eyes for a moment, leaning his head into her warm, velvet touch. His tongue felt thick when he spoke. “It’s okay. I don’t recall any pain. I know she only did what she felt would protect us both.”

Kazia shook her head. “I’m still sorry.”

He felt his face light up where she stroked him, and he couldn’t help himself. He gathered her into his arms and brushed his lips against hers. Every molecule electrified, and he moaned at the feel of goose bumps dotting his mortal flesh. The tingling was not at all unpleasant when evoked by a woman who drove him to near madness. He ran his fingers through her pale tresses, marveling at the silken feel of her unique hair.

She seemed pliant in his arms until his tongue flicked out to taste the seam between her lips. “Andel,” she said in a whisper against his mouth. “No.”

Kazia pulled back. Her cocoa eyes were dark with desire, and her porcelain skin reflected not only moonlight, but what he knew was his own pulsing glow. The sight of her was irresistibly sensual, and he reached for her again.

She stiffened and stepped back. “I can’t. Please understand.”

Without another word, she turned and ran. He stared after her, throbbing with need and struggling with the urge to go after her despite the resort’s restrictions. His cock and testicles ached with the fierce longing to mate with her. Every inch of him screamed with the need to release his seed while she shouted his name in ecstasy.

For a good twenty minutes, he stayed in the shelter of the palm trees, wondering whether she might come back and how she could affect him so powerfully. Why wait around in the shadows for someone who didn’t want him? He had plenty of other women right here who would willingly take him into their beds this very moment if he wished. He could buck the celibacy tradition and relieve the unbearable sexual tension that had been building over the past six months. Or, he could go ahead and choose one of the maidens who were still pure and initiate the reproductive ritual. There was so little time left. Why hold off any longer?

He returned to the private beach, deep in thought. With a careful glance around, he took off, soaring up to his balcony within moments. He knew good and well why he didn’t simply seek an end to his sexual solitude. The reason was a simple, singular, four-letter word.

Hope.
