Crepuscular Animals And 500th Post Giveaway

First things first- this is my 500th post. Who knew I had so much to say? I’m giving away a $10.00 Amazon giftcard to celebrate my milestone post. Leave a comment about something new you learned this week for a chance to win.

Secondly, I got into a conversation on twitter the other day with Jeffe Kennedy- who is a wonderful, witty writer, by the way- We got into a discussion about coyotes. I confessed my fear of them. I have a friend with a cabin in North Carolina that hangs off the edge of a mountain and whenever I stay there, I get really antsy at night when the coyotes are out and howling.  I thought they were nocturnal animals and only active at night. I’ve only ever seen them from a distance and at night.

The marvelous Jeffe told me that they are crepuscular animals. This was a new one on me. I’d not heard of this before. I recognized the root word of course, because it’s Latin. Crepuscular comes from the word for twilight. So these animals are active during twilight times- early morning as the sun comes up and late afternoon as it goes down.

I told Jeffe that I was going to work the word into conversation every day this week, so be glad you don’t live near me and my obnoxious self this week!

LOL what a word! I’m going to have to work that into at least one conversation this week, thanks for sharing it with us!

Love the new word. Can that be what I learned??? I actually learned just last night that you shouldn’t use fabric softeners when you wash your towels because it decreases their ability to absorb the water. Same thing with permanent press clothes or clothes with stain guard. Not the absorbancy thing but it inhibits their ability to do what they are supposed to do. That’s my thing for the week.

Awesome new thing to learn. I always do fabric softener with towels because I hate static.

Ha! Saw the title of this blog post on Twitter and it made me laugh!

Glad it made you laugh! I’ve been trying to work it in. LOL! I was hoping your Google alert would let you know your name was being bandied about!

It probably will, eventually. Just serendipity that I happened to catch your tweet in the fast-moving stream.

      • Author's avatar

Indeed, it was serendipitious- another one of my favorite words!

I learned about the website http://www.pinterest.com, which all the young girls at work have been using to keep track of ideas for their weddings and their home decorating schemes and whatnot. Another way to waste time on the internet. Just what I needed!
    Peace,
    Liv

Awesome, Liv. I’m gonna pass that one on to my future daughter-in-law. Thanks!

Woo-hoo! Congrats on your 500th post and thank you for the vocabulary lesson. I love learning things, especially words and trivia. Now I just need to find a way to work this into a conversation!

Thanks for the congrats, June. I also love to learn new things. We could start a revolution of use of crepuscular.

Congrats on the 500th post. Great site, enjoy checking out the posts. Love learning new words and have to say that is an interesting word & defination. I love to learn something new everyday. That a great giveaway. Would love to win.

I had forgotten about mistletoe being used in fertility rites. Love your gems of information!

Well done blog! I love your son’s idea for Hybrid City, especially eating food from within a 150 mole radius. Good luck on the dissertation.

I’m so excited for you. 500 posts. Wow! You are rocking it girl. I’m SO sorry I’m a day late. I only had phone access yesterday. Every time I tried to click on blog from your homepage, my phone hung. 😦

I don’t like Coyotes. They howl in the mornings around my home. They sound sick and look like death walks the Earth. Yuck. Your picture makes them look cute. I want these dogs to hang out instead of the half-dead scruffy kind near us.

    • Author's avatar

I’ve never thought they were particularly attractive either, Ciara. I’ve only ever seen scruffy ones, too. Banks for the congrats. It came up fast to 500 posts. Or it seemed like it anyway.

I meant thanks. Not banks. Lol

Thanks Dana. I’m glad you liked it. I think he’ll do well. He’s very together.

Terrific accomplishment — 500 posts. Congratulations.
    I can’t use that word … I can’t even re-type it.
But we hear a lot of coyotes here on our 25 acres … which is surrounded by considerable uninhabited acreage on 2 sides and partly inhabited acreage on 2 other sides.
But I’ve only SEEN them, “in person” a couple of times. My S-I-L has captured a few on his game camera, though.

Thanks Jeff. You should totally drop this word in conversation. Impress the neighbors. I think it’s great you can hear the critters but I’m glad it’s not me. I’d be skeered. Lol.

Woohoo! Congratulations on 500 posts! Don’t enter me in the contest, but I just had to stop by and say hi. And the title of the post MADE me want to read it. Crepuscular? That’s really a word, huh?

    • Author's avatar

Thanks for the congrats Laurie. And yeah, what a word. Mouthful.

  14. Shelley Munro's avatar

I hadn’t heard this word before so that’s something I learned this week. Congrats on your 500th post!

    • Author's avatar

Cool We both learned the same one. LOL Thanks for the congrats!
