Friday Facts- October 18, 2013-National Geographic

The National Geographic Society was founded in January 1888 and the first magazine was published in October 1888- I think it was the 17th. The circulation numbers in the USA alone are over 5 million a month. The magazine is published in 36 languages. Interestingly, the global circulation is 8.3 million a month so the bulk of the people who buy and read it are from the USA.

The cover has a yellow border and who doesn’t recognize it? It seems to me that we’ve all seen that cover throughout our lives and it doesn’t matter if you spot it all the way across the waiting room at the doctor’s office, you will always know it’s a National Geographic, won’t you?

Here’s an old cover and a new one. Not much has changed, right?

Oh, and by the way, it’s the full moon called the Hunter’s Moon this weekend. I believe I’ve blogged about it before but it’s called the hunter’s moon because in the old days, the hunters could stay out late as the moon lit up the sky bright enough that they could continue to hunt.

  1. I still enjoy National Geographic, but when I spot one that has a cover like the first,I have to look into it.That’s when there were still people and places unknown to most of the world, and the world have been changed so much. Even today, they show us the ocean depths in full color and they can still manage to find some hitherto inaccessible parts of the planet. I can’t imagine anyone not liking National G.

    • I love it too. It’s a great tool to learn and grow.

  2. We just, over the past couple years, got rid of a bunch of National Geographics we had. Just didn’t have room for them anymore. But they are fun to browse.

    • I love to browse them, too Laurie. I hate getting rid of magazines but there comes a time that you have to, right?

  3. I remember giving up old National Geographics. I still mourn a little. I love the old cover the best it is one thing that didn’t need a change.

Hunters moon, makes me think werewolves instead of hunters though. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I love the old covers, too! They’re cool.

And tis the season for vampires, too! LOL!
