Tuesday Tales – January 14, 2014- Satin
This week, we’re writing to the word prompt SATIN. This is a continuation of my 1950s romance I started sharing last week. Check out the other stories here.

The next morning Vivian found herself dressing with more care than usual. She stood in front of her closet and chose her favorite white blouse. It was made of acetate satin material and had a small jabot collar to match. She picked her best navy blue skirt and slid on her best pair of nylons. As she buckled her patent leather shoes, she realized that she was trying to be sure she looked her best since she was going to be seeing Rick Logan.
Angry with herself for subconsciously wanting the man to think she was attractive, she decided to change her appearance before she left her cottage. Instead of leaving her long, loose curls hanging around her shoulders as she usually did since it was her best asset, Vivian strode back into her bathroom and pulled her hair back in a severe bun. She stopped short of wiping off her lipstick—she’d never go that far—but she did remove a little of her eyeliner. It wouldn’t do for the arrogant man to think she was his for the taking.
Arriving at campaign headquarters a few moments early, Vivian unlocked the door and once inside, started the coffee. Her boss was the next to arrive and he staggered over to the coffee urn as if he were comatose. He gave her a wan smile.
“Late night, Mr. Jameson?” She handed him a cup of the strong coffee, black.
“You know, I’ve had a long career in running political campaign offices and this one should be easy since Ike has such a good rapport with the American public and since California is his vice-president’s home state but these late nights are getting to me. This may be my last hurrah. I’m getting too old for this.” He took a sip of the coffee. “Ahh. Divine.”
“I wanted to chat with you about the assignment to work with that captain from the base on the event they want to throw for the president.”
Mr. Jameson carried his cup and headed toward his office. He nodded to Vivian to follow him. “Come on in and we’ll talk. I need to find some aspirin, too.”
“I have some in my desk. I’ll bring them in.”
Vivian took the pain relievers to Mr. Jameson and watched as he downed three of them. He leaned his head on the back of his chair and closed his eyes. She stayed silent for a few moments while he sipped more of the coffee. Eventually, she opened her mouth to speak.
Before she could make a sound, without opening his eyes, Mr. Jameson said, “You can really help me out by being the campaign’s liaison with these people from the base. I have a lot going on with all the tasks being put on me by the party and this would be one less thing I would need to deal with.” He opened his eyes and leaned forward. “I’m not only burning the candle at both ends, the middle is melting too and when the commanding officer from Edwards called to ask for assistance with their event, I couldn’t very well say no and since you’ve been such a great full-time employee, I volunteered your services. I hope you don’t mind. I know you’ll do a wonderful job.”

Cover Love and Photo Credit
The last of the Minute Series weekend getaways from Secret Cravings is set to come out in February and when I sent in the cover questionnaire, I let them know that I had some pictures I took in Rome, Italy that might work for the cover since the story, Some Minutes…Last a Lifetime, takes place in the Eternal City.
I sent four pictures to the cover artist Dawne Dominique and she chose one of them to use as the background photo. This series is my over 40 year old heroine and over 50 year old hero.
Check out my original photo and then the cover. What do you think?

Tuesday Tales – January 7, 2014- Toes
This week’s prompt for Tuesday Tales is TOES.
I’ve started a new story set in 1956 near Edward’s Air Force base in California. The heroine works for Eisenhower’s second presidential campaign and the hero is a test pilot. Check out the other entries here.
“I was asked to meet the base commander here for a meeting with him and”—the man glanced down at a piece of paper he held—“a Vivian Bowker.”
“That’s her over there.” Susan pointed at Viv. “She cut herself and was trying to get the blood out of her blouse before your meeting.”
The man walked across the space and stopped in front of Viv. “What’s a little blood between friends?” He grinned, dimples flashing, as he held his hand out to shake hers. “I’m Rick Logan.” She noticed his eyes stray downward to the still-wet fabric of her shirt.
“I do have eyes, you know.”
“What do you mean?” He finally looked her in the face.
“You were paying so much attention to my breasts that I wasn’t sure you knew there was anything above them.”
“Lady, I’m aware of all of your gorgeousness. From the top of your head with those dark curls to your feet enclosed in those peep-toe shoes, you’re a real Dolly.”
“Enough already. I’m sure your lines impress all the gals who like men who have no depth but they won’t work for me. I’ve got way too much sense to be beguiled by a pretty-boy.” Viv moved over to her desk. She sat and picked up her stapler, determined to ignore the man.

Friday Fact- January 3, 2013- Three Kings Day
January 6 is traditionally celebrated as Three Kings Day in Spanish cultures and as Epiphany in other cultures/religions. Epiphany means the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi (the Magi weren’t Jewish but sought the King of the Jews). January 6th is the traditional day that the Magi came to see baby Jesus and gave gifts to the child. It’s the 12th day of Christmas and some folks leave their tree up until this day. It also would be the day in the Christmas carol that the true love would spend the most money in gifts starting with the twelve drummers drumming. I always wondered what the rate of pay per hour was of all those musicians and whether or not they had to live there forever and be fed, housed, etc.
One of my absolute favorite Christmas carols is We Three Kings of Orient Are. It’s a beautiful song but it also reminds me of my cousin when we were kids. Our dads were brothers and they took me, my sister and this cousin in the car one Christmas Eve to get us out of the way while grandma and the moms cooked. When we got to the gas station, my dad and uncle got out and dad asked if we wanted to come in the store. My clever, creative cousin started singing, “We three kids will stay in the car….”
That’s all I can recall of the song she made up because we were laughing so hard at her but she sang quite a bit more lyrics than that.

New Year’s Eve Mullings
Since it’s the last day of the year, my thoughts turn to the past twelve months and I’m thinking about all the people in my life who I’ve lost this past year. The two particular tragedies that stick with me are my friend’s seven year old Down’s Syndrome son who was backed over by the neighbor and killed and the forty-eight year old friend who was stung by a bee and died. My friend’s son almost died when he was four from an illness and spent months in the hospital and my friend never left his side. We thought when he survived that ordeal that he was on the road to a long life. Such tragedy. I spent a lot of the last year in funeral homes and at services- the summer months were the worst.
Both my parents had medical issues this year- they are both 73 and still active so it was such a shock to have first the second of my mom’s strokes and then the quadruple bypass for my father as well as the insertion of a pacemaker a few months later. They are both doing okay now.
In my day job, I had a case from hell that lasted the entire summer and into the fall. It almost demoralized me but I persevered and survived it. I spent the whole season spun up over the behavior of the opposing counsel. It’s funny to look back at how I let her get under my skin but it was not fun to live it. LOL! I didn’t get to take a long vacation this year because there was something going on in that case all the time.
Some great things happened this year as well. I got several book contracts, my son got married and I got to spend some girl time on a cruise with two friends. My inlaws had Thanksgiving together for the first time since my father-in-law passed away in 2008. That was a wonderful day. I’ve grown closer to some old friends when I decided that I needed to foster those relationships better. I have a lot of dear friends who, even though I don’t see them since they live a long way off, I know they are there for me if I need them. I got to spend time on two occasions with my cousin Amy this year and got to see my cousin Sharon when my son got married. I went to RWA national conference and hung out with Melanie Atkins, Sandra Bunino and Larynn Ford among other friends. Nothing bad happened at work or home- both buildings still stand and we’re all healthy.
I did lose a couple of friends this year and it saddens me. There was no argument or disagreement. They basically stopped coming around. We have a Thursday lunch tradition with a group of ladies and some just flat out left and walked away. I don’t know why and I can’t worry about it. I get the message loud and clear. Sometimes silence screams, doesn’t it?
Anyway, I hope 2014 has a lot less funerals, a few less hospital waiting rooms and a whole lot more love and friendship as well as good times! Happy New Year!!

Tuesday Tales Blog Hop- December 27-29, 2013
The authors at Tuesday Tales have decided to do a blog hop in honor of the end of the year holidays which, if you didn’t know it, also include my birthday. Yep, that’s right, the 28th is a little known holiday- the day the world was either lucky enough or unlucky enough to be graced with my presence. Na, I’m not an ego-maniac just a little flaky and speaking of flakes, anyone getting any snow for the holidays? Any White Christmases out there?
Part of this hop is to giveaway a book or something so I’m going to give one lucky reader an e-copy of my book, All I want for Christmas is a One Night Stand and to be entered to win, let me know if you got any gift this year that you would put in a white elephant trade or would re-gift. I will also have random.org draw a winner for a Jillian Chantal t-shirt. So, two chances to win – just tell me the worst present you got this year (and if you loved them all, tell me that too- I wouldn’t want to leave anyone out).

Be sure to click here and pop over to see what the other Tuesday Tales folks are gifting this weekend. Tell ’em Jill sent ya.
