Tuesday Tales Blog Hop- December 27-29, 2013

The authors at Tuesday Tales have decided to do a blog hop in honor of the end of the year holidays which, if you didn’t know it, also include my birthday. Yep, that’s right, the 28th is a little known holiday- the day the world was either lucky enough or unlucky enough to be graced with my presence. Na, I’m not an ego-maniac just a little flaky and speaking of flakes, anyone getting any snow for the holidays? Any White Christmases out there?

Friday Facts- December 20, 2013- Crosswords

As anyone who knows me knows, I am a crossword puzzle hound. I love, love them. One might even say I am obsessed with them. Well, tomorrow, December 21, 2013 is the 100th anniversary of the crossword puzzle. Arthur Wynne, an editor at New York World, a newspaper, was asked to create a game for the comic section of the paper and he came up with a grid of white squares with definitions at the bottom and the readers were to fill in the words. It was called a “word-cross” initially.

Other papers began to publish them as well. In 1921, Margaret Petherbridge came up with the rules about the letters being part of the across as well as the down sections of the grid.

The Google doodle today is a crossword puzzle you can actually work. I did it and the first clue is what word was the first used as both across and down. Answer? Fun. And it’s been fun ever since- at least for me.

Traumatic Experience for the Spouse

Since I’m still sick and have zero energy to fight Christmas shopping crowds, when the spouse said last night that he was going to the mall to get a few things, I asked him to pop into a certain store to grab something for the daughter-in-law. I’d been meaning to get her some yoga pants from Victoria’s Secret since she likes them. When I mentioned that to the spouse, he gasped and said, “You want me to go in THAT store?”

After I stopped laughing and explained to him that there was nothing there that would harm him, he asked what I wanted him to get. I said, “Extra small yoga pants.”

“Yoga as in yoga?” was his response.

Laughing again, I spelled it just in case he didn’t know what I meant.

Response: “What if they come in colors?”

“Get black but if the waistband is a color, just pick one you like.”

Two hours later:

Me: “You’re home. Did they hurt you in THAT store?”

Him: “Everybody working there was a guy.”

Me: “See? No danger there.”

Him: “Well, he DID ask if I wanted regular, boot cut, low rise…”

Me, cutting him off as I could see he was twitching: “What did you get?”

Him: “Leggings.”

Me: “Good job.”

Him: “I had them wrap them but got a box too. Wrap #2 son something in it. Freak him out.”

Another day in the life at the Chantal house.

Friday Facts- December 13, 2013- National Cocoa Day

Today is National Cocoa Day and it’s even cool enough in the panhandle of Florida to enjoy a cup. I hope you will join me in a toast to the Mayan people (yes, the same ones with the inaccurate calendar) who created the first chocolate drink. They passed this on to the Aztecs who made it an integral part of their culture in the 1400s. Europeans discovered it when they came to the new world. They took it back to the continent with them and only the wealthiest of people could afford to drink it since it was quite expensive. The Aztecs even used cocoa beans for currency.

Thank goodness cocoa became more affordable. Can you imagine life without it? *gasp*

Do you know the difference in hot cocoa and hot chocolate? Hot cocoa uses cocoa powder and sugar and hot chocolate uses melted chocolate.

I hear that hot cocoa can settle upset stomachs and aid in digestion. It also has antioxidants that can help prevent cancer and can have a positive effect on your arteries’ health. So, what are you doing still sitting here? Where’s your cocoa? I’m headed toward the kitchen myself.

In the book the Goddess Epona gets yanked out of the fae realm and onto the human earth plane. At the same time she plunges back in time to the Jazz Age of the Roaring Twenties, an era of speakeasies, flappers, and prohibition. Today I thought I’d share with you a smattering of the popular slang from that interesting period. You can hear many of the terms in the musical play and movie Chicago. Some of the colorful language is still in use today.

Daddy: a younger woman’s wealthy boyfriend

Friday Fact- December 6, 2013- The Good Ole 21st Amendment

The eighteenth amendment to the US Constitution otherwise known as the Volstead Act was a spectacular failure. It saw the beginning of organized crime in this country with the illegal sales of alcohol and speakeasys. The 21st amendment repealed the eighteenth and the last state to ratify the amendment was Utah on December 5, 1933 which by my math was 80 years ago yesterday.

To celebrate my right to buy liquor, I made Fireball Whiskey cupcakes. I found the recipe on another blog which you can find here. I must say, they turned out quite nice. Tasty and light.

redemptionforthedevilcoverart-1I also have a funny story about my story, Redemption for the Devil. It started in Ireland and the main characters worked their way across the Atlantic Ocean in the bar of the ship. I was writing away and then got them to New York Harbor. When I was thinking about where to put the heroine to work as a lounge singer, I slapped my forehead and said, “Crap, the Volstead Act, now what?” So, easy peasy, I moved her to Chicago where she met a gangster and went to work in his speakeasy.

Easy peasy, speakeasy. Lol. Just realized how stupid that sounded but I’m leaving it in.
