Friday Facts- June 17, 2011- Caligula

Since Ciara Knight http://www.ciaraknight.com/  tagged me this week and I told her last week that someday I was going to talk about Emperor Caligula, in her honor, here are the gruesome facts about this lecherous Emperor of Rome, who some say was infected with madness.  Judge for yourself.

Caligula ruled the Roman Empire from 37-41 AD. yep, less than half a decade- some of the citizens of the realm were probably relieved that he was gone so soon.  He tortured his enemies with no regard for whether they were enemies of the state as well; he killed Christians by crucifixion. He made people bow to him as a god.  He had sex with his own sisters and would have dinner parties where he’d leave the table and have sex with his  so-called friends’ wives. Once he came back to the table, he would rate the women’s performance for the whole group of diners. He’d married four times by the time he died.

He spent money from the treasury at will and then raised taxes to cover his expenditures. He extorted people for money as well.  He was ambushed and assassinated-by his own Imperial guard in an underground passageway. They killed him with a sword being thrust into his privates. Kind of a fitting end to a licentious despot, right?

Seven Things About Me

Ciara Knight, http://www.ciaraknight.com/ my fabulous friend has tagged me to tell seven things about myself and then tag seven more friends. So, hang on, here we go:

1. My feet were a size seven til I had the first child. Then they were a 7.5 til I had the second child. Now they are an 8.5.

2. I am a lapsed member of Mensa; I earned my bachelor’s degree in 2 years and graduated Magna Cum Laude. The only reason I wasn’t Summa Cum Laude was my philosophy teacher and I disagreed on everything and I made my only B in his class.

3. I get mad easy but I also get over it fast. I’m not a grudge holder.

4. I hate English peas. Those little green orbs turn my stomach.   Nope, not for me!

5. I don’t like dolls. Their faces can creep me out.

6. I am an empath. I try to avoid negative people and funerals as I take on all the angst around me and can feel really, really down even when I don’t know why.

7. I am the great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grand daughter of a Lord Mayor of London and am the great, great, great, great, great grand daughter of a patriot of the Revolutionary War and they are from the same line- ergo, I love Great Britain as well as the US of A.

Terrain and Feet

Here’s the photos of the different terrains that the hikers in my family hit last week. They hiked on trail and off trail. Some pavement, some gravel, some cobble stones, some boulders and some grass and dirt. They hiked from 3300 feet to 800 feet. Straight down. Toes were hammered. Pain was present. They soldiered on.

Before and After

The recent grad, the man who has been at a drawing table for five years, and his dad, the man who has been a desk jockey for more years than I care to recall, hiked part of the Appalachian Trail this past week. They did a three day hike in a day and a half, straight down, and almost killed themselves. They decided that the old boy scouting days of being in condition to walk with a pack on your back with all your necessities were too far in the past and they need to get back up to speed.  LOL!

They did enjoy themselves  but ended up, before the week was over, in North Carolina doing some fly fishing and sleeping in a hotel instead! They are more like me than they want to admit.  LOL!

Here’s a before and after shot. Later in the week, I’ll show you pics of the terrain and then the poor feet! Wordless Wednesday will also  be an awesome pic the son took. He and I are photography hounds and he got some great shots as usual.

Friday Facts-June 10, 2011- St. Bartholomew

Saint Bartholomew, also known as Nathaniel, was one of the original 12 Apostles. He went to India and Armenia (Turkey) to spread the Gospel. He was eventually flayed alive and skinned. How awful that must have been. He was in Armenia when he was killed. There is also some thought that he was crucified upside down like St.Peter.

St. Bartholomew is painted on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel. He holds a knife in one hand and his skin in another. He has the face of Michelangelo. The ceiling of that chapel is stunning. Literally. The room is smaller than you would expect.
I’ve been to the Sistine Chapel and it is a sight to behold. My son is excited to visit it this summer and I can’t wait to see his face as he takes it in.

A Little Freaky

Some of you may have seen my facebook status on this on Tuesday. I was blithely minding my own business watching Planet Green. A show about the Bermuda Triangle that was very interesting. It showed several scientists and experiments they were doing to try to explain some of the eerieness (is that a word?) out there.

When that show was over, I didn’t move very fast to change the channel and a show came on about the Queen Mary II.  As most of you that follow this blog know, I just finished the first draft of a manuscript that takes place on the Queen Mary (the original ship) in 1937 and I stayed on the original ship in Long Beach, Calif in March. So, I decided to watch the show. To compare the two ships.

Imagine my shock when they started talking to the man who is the manager of the hotel part of the ship and they introduced him as Dirk someone. I didn’t hear his last name because I was coughing my tea out of my lungs. Dirk? The man’s first name is Dirk?

Talk about wild. This show was made in 2009. I swear I’ve never seen it before. But how can it be that my hero in  my manuscript is named Dirk? True, he’s not a Cunard employee in the book, but dang, can you believe they had a Dirk on the show and I have a Dirk in my book? Maybe you aren’t creeped out by this, but man, I am.  LOL!

Ciara Knight is in the House!!

Today, I have the ultra-cool Ciara Knight with me talking a little about herself and a little about her book  (Rise From Darkness) that sold to Turquoise Morning Press and is coming out in March, 2012. As a teaser for the novel, she also has a novella prequel coming out next month. Yes, next month. So, strap in, and read all about this new Young Adult romance writer and her awesome sounding debut novel. And, oh yea, she signed with an agent recently as well- we’ll all be able to say we got to hang out with her in the early years!!

Welcome Ciara.

JILLIAN:  Tell us a little about yourself: How did you get bitten by the writing bug?

CIARA: I always had a passion for storytelling. At an early age, I wrote several short stories and poems, and in college I started work on my first novel. It wasn’t until late 2008 that I returned to my true passion of writing. Over the past few years, I’ve penned five novels and joined several professional writing organizations to better my craft.

JILLIAN: What’s the name of your hero in your book Rise From Darkness? How did you come to choose it?

CIARA:  Alexander Lorre. I wanted a strong name for the hero, one that represented a great burden. There are many strong men in history named Alexander.

JILLIAN: You’re right about that. I love a strong male name.  How about the same question about your heroine.

CIARA:  Gabriella Moore. This is not actually her real last name. Her father works in a top secret job and every time they move, they take a new identity. Gabriella means “heroine of God.” I thought it fit the story well.

JILLIAN:  I love that you chose such a great name with a wonderful meaning for your heroine.  Do you think names play an important role in the development of your characters? Why or why not?

CIARA:  I did look at meanings of names while working on this book. Many of the demon and angel names in Rise From Darkness have appropriate meanings for their characterizations. As a matter of fact, there is a character that his name means something that is a clue to his true identity.

JILLIAN:  Oooh, I love that. A clue to be looking for is gonna be such fun. How did the idea of a fallen angel take root in your mind to lead to this book?

CIARA:  I’ve had the idea for years but it took awhile to build the storyline over a three book series. I knew I wanted to know the ultimate end before I put the first book out there. There are a lot of hidden meanings, symbols, and clues in the books.

JILLIAN: I love mysteries, so I’m going to really enjoy this series.  By the way, my mamma always said to never talk about religion, but I have to ask: What’s your background?

CIARA:  I’m a Christian. This book is not a religious book, but I think like most stories there is an inspirational undertone.

JILLIAN:  Did you base any of your world you created for this story on the angel lore from the Bible or did you create it all from scratch?

CIARA:  I based some on biblical angels. I also took Greek mythology and twisted it and redefined it.

JILLIAN:  The more I hear, the more I can’t wait for this release. I love mythology.  I notice you have a prequel coming out before the actual novel. I’m very interested in how you write a prequel when the main characters don’t meet until the novel begins. Tell us about that process and how you dealt with that.

CIARA:  The prequel is written in a secondary character, Sammy Loree’s, POV. Sammy is Alex’s earthbound sister in the series and Gaby’s best friend. Both Alex and Gaby appear, or are mentioned, by the end of the short story. It gives a reader an in-depth look at the world and characters in a short amount of time.

JILLIAN:  Sounds great.  When does the novella come out?

CIARA:  July 2011

JILLIAN:  When will we see the novel?

CIARA:  March 2012

JILLIAN:  Who’s your publisher?

CIARA:  Turquoise Morning Press

JILLIAN:  How can we contact you?

JILLIAN:  Will you share the blurb with us?

 CIARA:  Of course!

Alexander Lorre gives new meaning to the term “tormented teen”. He’s a newly fallen angel, which means he has the self-control of a three-year-old, the hormones of a teenager and the strength of an angel. When he rescues Gaby Moore from drowning, the chemistry between them is undeniable. With a local demon threatening Gaby’s life, he struggles to find a balance between remaining close enough to protect her but distant enough to control his desires.

As danger draws closer, Gaby uncovers shattering secrets that will lead to an ultimate choice. Will she fight alongside her father, an earthbound hunter killing fallen angels and demons, give into the demon blood coursing through her veins and join the demon world, or save the man she loves from both? The first two choices damn her, but the last one could destroy them all.

JILLIAN:  That sounds like such a good read.  Will you come back when the book is released to give us more details and an excerpt?

CIARA:  Absolutely!!! Thanks so much for having me. This has been such a blast!
