Frustration Level

As many of you know, I’m the reluctant chairman of my chapter’s RWA conference. I’m super frustrated with the whole process. I spent my whole day off working on the damnable thing and I can’t seem to win. Every time I think I take a step or two forward, I get knocked back ten. I’m not a person who throws in the towel easily but there is where I am. It’s a thankless job and I don’t need the stress of it in addition to everything else going on in my life.

I’ve got to nail down a couple of more details before I turn it over to someone else, but turn it over I shall. I can’t deal with it anymore.

Friday Facts- January 13, 2012- Paradoxical Effect

I’ve still got the remnants of the cold/illness from the trip back from England and am off and on taking stuff to help me breathe, thus, I got the idea for this Friday Fact. I have a weird body chemistry and have what’s called a paradoxical effect when I take certain medications. This effect means that the opposite intended reaction happens when the medications are ingested.

I can pretty much guarantee that when I take non-drowsy sinus or cold meds, that I will be knocked out in about an hour. I also have issues with certain pain meds. They make me hyper and I have out-of-body experiences. I hover over myself and watch as I sleep. It’s quite weird.

My friend, the psychologist is the one who told me what this is called. It usually happens with sedatives and barbituates as well as anti depressants. It can also happen with antibiotics and that may well be why I usually have to have more than one dose of those when I get an infection.

Another Movie

So, I went to see another movie this weekend. This is one I’ve long been aticipating since it has some of my favorite actors as well as it’s a remake of a series I saw back in the day and I also read the book back in the dark ages of my life. It’s John Le’Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. It came out in England early in November and #1 son saw it then. He tortured me several times by letting me know he’d seen it and I hadn’t. Brat.

I liked it although I felt the pacing was quite slow. I like movies to move faster than this one did. It was a great story and well done atmospherically, but I think it could’ve been better with a faster pace.

It has Gary Oldman, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Ciaran Hinds, Benedict Cumberbatch (and if you haven’t seen him in Sherlock, you’re missing out), John Hurt and Tom Hardy. A wonderful cast Just spectacular. Here’s the book trailer:

Friday Facts- January 6, 2012- Old Blighty

A nickname for England is Old Blighty. The term has been around since the British held India as a colony. Blighty is derived from an Indian word that means Britain- bilāyatī.

The soldiers slurred the word into Blighty. Kind of like the area of London known as Elephant and Castle which was a corruption of Eleanor of Castile’s name. She was the queen of Edward I.

The term became popular during WWI when men would hope for an “old Blighty” wound- one not bad enough to kill you, but bad enough to be sent back home to get well. A number of songs were written with the term in the lyrics.

Looking for Photos

I’ve been looking online for royalty free photos for my book trailers I’m trying to make. Can I just say, it’s super hard to find a buff African American man who has on a camoflauge shirt. I have been trolling the sites where photos can be purchased to use to no avail. I went to lunch at one of my favorite places on Wednesday, the 3rd and lo and behold, there sat the perfect man to pose for pictures to be Sebastian in my novel. Too bad I was too chicken to ask him. He was quite lovely and had an amazing physique that was set off by the ribbed wool sweater he had on.  I pointed him out to my friend, Arabella and she agreed that he was “pretty.”  Alas, I let him walk away, too afraid that he would think I was a nutcase.
