“Love in the Highlands”

Yesterday, the host body had her story called Pimps and Hos released by L&L Dreamspell in the DreamSpell Mysteries Vol. 1 and today, I have a story released at Romance Stories Magazine  http://romancestoriesmagazine.com/   This story is called Love in the Highlands. It is based in John O’Groat’s Scotland on a  film set.  Go by and check  it out if you have a chance.  It’s a little spicier than the last one I had published there called One Night in Costa Rica.

started my NaNoWriMo story at lunch today- a whopping 645 words so far.  It is called Obsession.

Pimps and Hos

A great friend of mine that’s closer than a sister to me had one of her short stories released today. Check it out:  http://www.allromanceebooks.com:80/product-dreamspellmysteryvolume1-477918-152.html    The name of the story is Pimps and Hos.

My friend’s pretty psyched about it since her excerpt is on the order page. Makes her happy.  She also has to thank her friend RomanceMama for the lunch discussion that evolved to a psychic lemur idea- It became an inside joke that got out of control and eventually, it became a bar name instead of a character in a story. Though it would have made a grand character, too.

Go read my friend’s excerpt and see  if you think she can write. If she can’t, don’t tell me cause I’d have to tell her and it would break her heart. She’s already seen some stuff she would have done differently! LOL!

Friday Facts- October 29, 2010- Pass the Bar

As a lawyer, I was sure you guys would be interested in this Friday fact! LOL!

Do you know the origin of  the phrase “pass the bar?”  The bar is actually the barrier between the well of the courtroom and the gallery.  Most of the time, in my experience, it is a rail with a swinging door, but it doesn’t have to be.

The well of the courtroom is the area where the judge  and jury sit and where the counsel tables are located.  The gallery of the courtroom is where the audience sits.

A person that has “passed the bar” is a person that has earned the right to sit in the well of the courtroom at one of the counsel tables. They thus “pass the bar” each time they enter the courtroom and take their seat.

And, see, I know you thought passing the bar meant not going in for a drink at the local watering hole.  And I guess you’d be right, too.

The area in front of the rail (bar) is the well; behind is the gallery

NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo starts on November 1st which is in just a few days.  Anyone on board with me? My user name there is sfcatty- become my buddy and I’ll cheer you on!  Last year was my first time to do it and I got done in 21 days. We were going out of town for Thanksgiving and I knew I’d get nothing done on the trip and as anal as I am, I had to “win” the dang thing.

I know I can do this again. It’s not unusual for me to write 10,000 words in a day- especially when I have what I call the “fire in the veins” going.  Sometimes, the story  is so strong that my arms feel like they are on fire with the words flowing out of my fingertips. It is an utterly amazing feeling.

The best part of NaNoWriMo 2009?  I sold my story called Redemption for the Devil that I wrote that month. Now, don’t be fooled, it needed a lot of work and I expanded it to 75,000 words before it sold, but like they say on the NaNo site, it’s easier to edit a first draft than a blank page.

This year, I’m writing a story called Obsession (well, that’s the name for now, anyway) and I hope to be as successful with it as with Redemption for the Devil which comes out from Desert Breeze Publishing in July 2011.  The writers at Desert Breeze Publishing are awesome and friendly and the editor is really a great person to work with.  I’m happy to be on board there.

Come write a book with me in 30 days- it’ll be fun!

The Skeleton Key

watched this movie on Monday night when  got home from Tallahassee.  It was interesting. Not scary but it had dark and creepy scenery. I liked it. Had not seen it before so it was nice to see a new seasonal movie. It came out in 2005 but I never made it to the theater to see it.

Gena Rowlands was delightfully evil in it and I loved the line she said to Kate Hudson’s character, something along the lines of “I believe you’ve broken my legs.”  She said it in such a nonchalent way, it was almost funny.

I enjoyed the New Orleans/bayou setting as well. The outside of the house looked like Oak Alley to me, but it wasn’t as the end credits showed an aerial view and the tree line was wrong.

Of course, the bad accents for the people that are supposed to be from New Orleans annoyed me to no end. Sometimes you have to overlook that and just go along for the ride.

The Norliss Tapes

Anyone ever seen this horror movie with Angie Dickinson, Claude Akins and Roy Thinnes? It was a made for tv movie released in 1973.  Roy Thinnes plays an occult investigator (a precursor to all those ghost hunter/paranormal investigators of today- truly a man before his time.)

Angie Dickinson’s husband dies and he is interred in a mausoleum out behind the mansion where they lived.  He  has a ring on his finger that has special powers.

Not to ruin the show, but the “creatures” are particularly cheesy looking. It’s supposed to be scary but the scariest thing about it is the 1970s fashions!

Hunter’s Moon

Tonight is the Hunter’s Moon. The first full moon after the autumnal equinox is called the Hunter’s Moon. It is also the first full moon after the Harvest Moon which we had in September. The Hunter’s Moon can either occur in September or October,  and this year, it comes in October. It’s called the Hunter’s Moon because the time of darkness in the sky is less than other times of the year and thus, hunters have more time to search for prey. Native Americans used the extra time to stray further from their homes and hunt for meat for the long winter ahead.

The lore of the moon is very intriguing and I love to read about the interesting beliefs of our ancestors.  It’s also interesting that a lot of the things that were believed by our ancestors have panned out to not be superstitions but true, scientific facts such as the Hunter’s Moon. It is now known that the Hunter’s Moon does rise to visibility in the sky earlier in the evening because of the way the Earth is tilted this time of year and thus, the placement of the moon on the horizon in the Northern Hemisphere is different.

My #2 son went out with his friends last night and had to come back in to call my attention to the moon. Said it looked bigger and brighter.  It really isn’t brighter this time of year, but it really did look awesome hanging there.  Get out tonight and enjoy it.

And, one last thing, I can’t talk about the Hunter’s Moon without a mention of my favorite Victoria Holt book, On the Night of the Seventh Moon. Yeah, I know, it doesn’t say Hunter’s Moon, but for some reason, this book reminds me of a fall Hunter’s Moon- maybe because it occurs in the area that would become  a united Germany- The Black Forest- there is a hunter’s cottage that plays an integral part in the story and when I think of that area of the world, I think of Oktoberfest (which really occurs in September now) and I’m reminded of fall and all its beauty.  Anyway, the brain and its inner workings is a fascinating story for another day. For now, I’ll shut  up.

Friday Facts- October 22, 2010- Polymath

A  polymath is a person that is well educated in a number of various areas.  An example of a polymath would be Leonardo Da Vinci. He was truly a Renaissance Man. He was educated in math, history, art and the sciences.

A true polymath is learned in many disciplines.  A well-rounded person could be called a polymath- such as my favorite one, Aristotle.  He was not only a philosopher and teacher,  he was involved in music, theatre, science, politics and other endeavors.  A more modern polymath was actor, lawyer, athlete Paul Robeson. He was also a social activist that was involved in the fight for freedom for people in Africa, the Caribbean and Australian aborigines.

I would like to call myself a polymath and  maybe I am. LOL! I have a career as a lawyer and I have sold some of my writing, so I guess I’m a novelist. I have never made a career of my other interests but I do have some.  I danced for many years and performed on stage.  True, I never got paid for it and I never will, but it was a great deal of fun.
