Snippet

I’m editing Runaway and got to this part and decided to share a little snippet.  This is in Rio with Evangeline in the back seat of a cab and Cecil in the front. After she thought they were going to have sex.

They rode back to the Copacabana in silence, he in the front seat, she in the back. As she sat there, mad that he’d gotten her worked up for nothing, she stared at the back of his head, wishing for the Glock. She noticed a small mole on the back of his neck and thought it would make a nice target. She giggled.

Cecil looked over his shoulder, “Forgive me?”

The cabbie said, “ah. A lover’s spat?”

Van snorted, “Not hardly. And, Cecil, no, I haven’t forgiven you. I was back here deciding where to put the bullet in the back of your head.”

The cabbie roared in laughter, “Sir, I envy you. A woman with such passion, ah. Yes. I envy you.”

My characters

In my story Runaway, some of my characters are named after towns/exits in Georgia.  And my hero is named after two Alabama towns.    A couple of years ago, as I drove to Atlanta on Interstate 85, I passed an exit outside  of Montgomery called Cecil/Waugh.    A bit down the road, in Georgia, I passed an exit called Senoia/Griffin.   They both struck me as great names for characters and I wrote them down (yes, as I was driving).  I had no idea what story they would fit in but I find inspiration everywhere so I kept it in my idea book.

A couple of years passed and I started working on the romantic suspense I just finished.  Cecil Waugh had become my hero, a half German/half British Interpol Agent  and Senoia Grffin had become the client of my heroine, a Wall Street attorney named Evangeline Fleet.   Had to take another trip to Atlanta on a Wednesday through Friday for work.  I came back the long way as I had to also go to Tallahassee for work on that Monday.  Traveled down Interstate 75 this time.  Evangeline had surprised me with her use of aliases and I found some great ones on the Interstate again.   One of  her aliases is Sophie Tifton and one is Ocilla Sycamore.  I think I need to invest in a Georgia map as it  is a jewel of a state when names are needed.  Imagine what’s out there that isn’t off an exit on the interstate.

One of my friends, Arabella Stokes, has told me she is going to name her next character Marianna Bonifay.   Both Florida exits.  Have I started a trend?  Always wanted to be a trend setter.

Here is a picture from the Cecil/Waugh area of Alabama:

Making some progress on the edits

And caught a major error last night.  WHEW!  How dumb would I feel if that one had gotten out.  I’m not telling what it was and I can only say that my excuse was it was late at night when I wrote it.   I had to send my beta reader an email telling her to ignore the gaffe in the first draft!

I’m sometimes amazed when I re-read a section that I thought was no good, to find something salvageable  in it.  Of course, I could be full of crap because I may not know what the hell I’m doing.

The End

Just typed the end on the current WIP.  First draft done. Onward to the edits.  Dare I hope it’ll be ready in 18 days for Silken Sands?

Runaway

My goal is to finish the first draft this weekend.  I’m so very close, I hope nothing crops up to stop me.  My real goal is to have it ready to go if I get a request for it from the Silken Sands Conference on Pensacola Beach in mid March.

This one is along the lines of the first novel I started way back in 1998.  I had a major computer crash  back then – with real sound effects- whirring, growling and finally a huge roar and death.  It was an agonizing thing to witness- the death of a laptop- my first experience with such a thing.   Anyway, I lost eight chapters of the manuscript I was writing at the time.  Couldn’t retrieve it. Tried to re-create it but I was so upset, I couldn’t think.  Demoralized me to the point that I didn’t write for a very long time.

When I started back, I kept myself to short stories because I was afraid to invest all that time again.  I finally picked my self up and have written three full manuscripts.  This fourth one started out one way and then made the turn to a romantic suspense.  The South American sojourn of my characters is reminiscent of the one I wrote way back in the day!   So, altogether, I am pretty happy with this one.  I think I am coming full circle. And to celebrate, that full circle trip that took over a decade,  here is a circle: Specifically, Columbus Circle.  My heroine is back in her beloved Manhattan.

Blah

had a looooonnnng day at the real job today.  Have lots of writing to do tonight but can’t get motivated.  I’m trying to get the WIP whipped into shape for the Silken Sands Conference in March, so I need to get my rear in gear.  I know I should be working on scene 3, chapter 12, but this blogging thing takes less brain power and my brain is on overload from dealing with idiots all afternoon and into the night.  Hate getting home after 6:30 pm from work.  Makes for a cranky girl.

Tallahassee

Had to go today for the real job.  I got lots of plotting done for the rest of Runaway (Currently on Ch 11).  The last chapter is almost fully formed in my head.  Came back and took some notes. I usually jot some in the car while driving (Yeah. I know. Not a good idea).  But driving was a tricky business this time.  The torrential rain this morning was insane and this afternoon the speeders were insane.  Insanity was the theme of the day.

I’m excited about the last chapter. Its gonna be cute.

The weird thing about how I write is that I finish several chapters and then the ending comes to me and I feel compelled to get that down.  Then I go back and fill in the other chapters between where I left off and the end.  I’ve written three novellas and three other manuscripts (I’m on my fourth) and I’ve had this happen every time except on one.  Strange. But it seems to work for me.

Can  you guess where my hero and heroine are now?

Guests and more guests

My group blog, http://southernsizzleromance.wordpress.com/  is kicking off a great great month of guests.  We have our biannual conference in March on Pensacola Beach and have several editors and agents coming.  Some of them have been kind enough to agree to answer some questions on our blog.  Kind of a countdown to Conference, if you will.

We also have some writer friends that have agreed to guest blog as well.  Cat Johnson is one for next week and Amber Williams will be here the week after that.  They will each be talking about their new releases.  Lots of reasons to visit the sizzlers’ blog in the next few weeks.

Interpol NYC Lyric

“I had seven faces
thought i knew which one to wear
But I’m sick of spending these lonely nights
training myself not to care”

This is one of the lyrics that is inspiring me with my heroine, Evangeline, who is being pursued by an Interpol Agent.   I love this song by the band Interpol.  Funny, I found  the song  AFTER I decided to write this story.

Runaway

Been working on my WIP, working title:  Runaway.  I am happy with  the direction it is going.  Surprising me.  I am a “pantser” and the fun thing about that is that I get to be as surprised (and even sometimes stunned) as my characters at the direction of the story.  This story has turned into way more than I intended in the beginning.  Here is where my main character is right now:  Recognize where this is?   No cheating.

AND I realized today while I was out and about that I have a MacGuffin in this story.    That makes me proud.  Alfred Hitchcock would be proud, too.  I hope.

EDITED TO ADD:  On the way in to work, I decided I actually have two MacGuffin’s.  One minor, one major.
