Friday Facts- February 10, 2012- Carefree Highway

I’m guest blogging today at my friends blog. Talking about Sebastian’s Salvation with Steph!
http://sgcardin.blogspot.com/

Gordon Lightfoot and I have a lot in common. No, I can’t sing worth a toot so that’s not it. He uses road signs for ideas and I do, too. In fact, Quincy Holt in Surfer Bride got her name from two cities on road signs on my drive to Tallahassee each month. Other characters got their names the same way. On road trips. It’s quite handy.

The legend is that Gordon Lightfoot got the idea for this song from a road sign north of Phoenix, Arizona. It’s on a highway that leads to a town called Carefree, Arizona. It’s a highway near interstate 17. I think it’s super awesome. He said he wrote down the name of the highway as a good song title and kept it for 8 months until the song came to him.

I can totally relate. Even have done it. Several times.

RELEASE DAY!!

Sebastian’s Salvation is out today!! YAY! This book is very special to me. I’ve long wanted to write a hero with a disability as well as an interracial story. I absolutely adore Sebastian. He’s a hero that I hope readers can relate to. I’m guest blogging about the book today here: http://joanchandler.wordpress.com/ as well as here: http://www.Cynthiaeden.com

Here’s the blurb, buy link and excerpt.

Blurb:
Three lives intertwine—a former Green Beret, now a painter of nude portraits tormented by the death of his comrade, an earl’s daughter, and a crazed stalker. Will the acts of the stalker force the soldier back into the life of violence which he sought to avoid?
Sebastian Hughes, wounded on a mission in Afghanistan, discovers a talent for painting nude portraits while in a rehabilitation center learning to walk again after losing part of his leg. He becomes the toast of London society and women clamor to be painted by him.
Lady Joanna Gresham, nursing a broken heart and used to getting what she wants, sets her sights on having her portrait painted by Sebastian. Once she meets him, she wants him for herself. She pursues him, intent on winning him. What she didn’t count on was a stalker who wants to harm everyone Sebastian holds dear.

Excerpt:

Joanna Gresham passed Margaret in the hallway of Bast’s building. Margaret carried a saddle under her arm.
Margaret stopped her and hitched the saddle to a more comfortable position. “You one of the many?”
“Many what?”
“Clients of Bast’s?”
Joanna shook her head. “No. But I’m thinking about it. I was at his show last night and am very impressed.”
“With the man or the artist?” The woman smiled coyly
“The artist of course.” Joanna stood tall and looked down her nose at the impertinent woman. The nerve to ask me such a thing. As if I’d be interested in a hoodlum.
“Don’t have to get huffy, Lady Joanna. All the women in town are swooning over the man. Some are even commissioning portraits just to tempt him with their bodies. No harm meant.”
Joanna ran her hands through her hair. “Sorry. Just moody, I guess.”
“No problem. Enjoy your session.”
“I don’t have a session. I’m just going to talk.”
“Good luck then. I think you’ll like Bast. I gotta go. Late for a practice run.”
“Good luck with practice. Ta, Margaret.” Joanna waved good-bye and approached the door to Bast’s atelier. Why am I so nervous? He’s just a man I want to hire. Why should I feel so skittish?
Joanna knocked lightly on the door.
The door burst open, and the man asked, “What did you for—”
He stopped short. “Uh. Sorry, I thought you were Margaret, come back for something she forgot. She always leaves something behind.”
“Is that why you were already at the door?”
He smiled. “Yeah. I give her about three minutes after she leaves to come dashing back. I thought I timed it right.” His smile got larger.
Why does his smile have to be so spectacular? He’s gorgeous even with that scar across his face. “Sorry, it’s just me. I’m not sure if you remember—”
“Of course, I do. You’re the lady in the alley, the one that needed no help with her aching feet. Come on in.” He opened the door wider to allow her access to the loft.
Once they were inside, he showed her over to a client chair. He took a seat behind the desk, leaned across the top, and asked, “What can I do for you?”
She put one hand on the desktop and scraped her nail across the surface. “I was at your show last night—”
“Yeah, I know. I saw you, remember?”
“I recall.” She frowned. Was the man determined to make her feel stupid?
“Sorry, ma’am. I didn’t mean to interrupt you. Go on.” Bast nodded his encouragement.
“I was thinking I might want a portrait of myself. Your work is impressive. Very tasteful. I know it seems like I’m just jumping on a trend, but I really am in awe of your abilities.”
“Thank you, ma’am. I appreciate it. I’m a little full right now. The show last night garnered me a lot of commissions, and I’m afraid I don’t have time to add one more person to my schedule. I’ll be glad to put you on the waiting list.” He pulled a pad out of his top drawer.
She stood, and the chair teetered and fell back against the wall. “I know what you’re doing. You jerk.”
He leaned back in his chair and looked at her. His face showed no emotion. “What’s your problem, Lady?”
“Lady? You say it that way because you know who I am? You think you can be a sarcastic bastard to me?”
“Ma’am, you came in here, didn’t introduce yourself to me, and now you’re offended? I can’t figure that out. All I said was I have to put you on my waiting list. How you think that’s something offensive, I don’t know.” He sat forward in the chair.
She glared. “I’m Lady Joanna Gresham. I don’t do waiting lists.”
He stood up and walked around the desk to her. He got in her face and said, “I don’t do snobby Ladies. So, I suggest you get out of my studio.”
Joanna pushed his chest. “I just bet you don’t do ladies.” She looked around and took in the whole room and nodded toward the fainting couch under the window. “I bet you do the ladies right over there.”
Enraged, he grabbed her arms and shoved her against the wall. He pressed against her. “If I wanted to do a lady, I’d do her right here against this wall.” He lifted her off her feet as if she was no larger than a toy doll and pulled her over to the other client chair. He sat in it and pulled her on top of himself. “Or here in this chair.”
She jerked off his lap and stumbled backward. “How dare you touch me, you arrogant—”
“What? Black bastard? Is that what you want to call me, your white holiness? Lady Joanna Gresham that doesn’t do waiting lists? Huh? Huh? That what you want to say?” He stood up.
She continued to back up. “You’re crazy. You know that? You’re insane.”
He stalked toward her. “And you’re all alone here with me. A crazy, scar-faced, big black man who isn’t intimidated by a title. Now, what are you gonna do?”
“I’m leaving.” She flounced toward the door.
Just as she got to the door and opened it, he slammed his hand on it and shut it. His body leaned against hers. He pressed against her and whispered, “I bet you always leave. When the going gets tough and you don’t get your way, you leave. Right?”
He let go of the door and stepped back. “Thank you for coming by, ma’am. I’ll be sure to not add you to the waiting list.”

Weekend

I had a pretty good weekend but as usual, it went by too fast. We had our GCCRWA meeting on Saturday which was great as I got to see some of my favorite people. I just adore some of those ladies and they make me feel good about what I have to offer. I really think it’s important to give back to the chapter. When I started trying to get published, there were ladies in the chapter who helped me along. Now that I’ve had some minor success, I believe I should return the favor by helping the members who are just starting their journey to publication. Alas, the sad part is that we have some members who don’t feel that way. It’s sad that we have members who never, or rarely, come back to share their knowledge once they get the big contract. Don’t get me wrong, some do, but quite a few don’t. I’m a firm believer in returning at least two-fold what you were given. I wish more people had that philosophy.

I also had the opportunity to see The Woman in Black with Daniel Radcliffe in the title role. I’ve seen the stage version and the story varied somewhat but I liked it. Very atmospheric and dark. Daniel did an excellent job in the role. He’s quite a wonderful actor and I’m proud that he’s made the transition to adult actor with what appears to be ease. I recommend the film. It’s along the lines of a Hitchcock film and I love those.

I did not watch the Super Bowl. Sorry. No one I cared about was playing. And besides, I couldn’t miss Downton Abbey, could I?

Friday Fact- February 3, 2012- Seahorses

I’m late because I had the case from hell today and had to prepare til my eyeballs hurt yesterday and last night. So, this is a cop out post. I’m sure you all already know this fact but heck, it’s my blog and I’m gonna tell you it anyway! LOL!

Seahorses are named from the Greek word Hippocamus. Hippo means horse and Kampos meaning sea monster. They are from the Chordata phylum (And I only tell you this part because I have a story with a snow leopard shifter in it. He’s the hero and his name is Chordata- he goes by Cord- Sometimes I can be more clever than is good for me.) Chordata is the phylum for creatures who are vertebrates. I think it’s cool that snow leopards, sea horses and humans are all of the same phylum. But I digress from the fact I wanted to share. I blame the brain damage I suffered last night as I pored over legal texts, so bear with me.

Today’s fact is that the male seahorse is the one who gives birth. Yep, tis true. I bet you knew that one already, didn’t you? The female deposits eggs into a sac on the male’s front and he carries them from anywhere from 9-45 days. Once he releases them, they emerge fully formed and his job is done. No nuturing, no child support, nothing. Off he runs to play another day.

Today is definitely TGIF for me.

Foreign Language Films

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I like to watch foreign films and this past weekend, I took the time to watch two. One was called Flammen et Citron and the other was called Army of Shadows. Both dealt with the resistance in World War II. I’m fascinated by the people who were so daring as to take part in those activities. One of my novels coming out this year has a character who was in the Resistance. Since the book is a romance, I didn’t get into the darkness of that kind of war within a war.

The first film I watched was about two Dutch men who executed Dutch traitors as well as Nazis. It was dark and disturbing as the war itself must have been. The lines were blurred and knowing who to trust was very difficult if not impossible for those men. This movie was based on two real people and it was a very harsh look at the ugliness of war.

The second one I watched this weekend was Army of Shadows and was written and directed by two men who were actually in the French Resistance. It was also dark and gritty but there were lots of heroic moments in it. The characters in this story were also in situations where they had to do things they probably would’ve never dreamed of doing in non-war times. In this film, there’s an actor who plays a former pilot who joins the Resistance. He’s super handsome and I thought he looked kind of familiar. I saw his name in the opening credits and wondered if he was the father or somehow related to one of my favorite French actors.

Once the movie was over, I looked him up and, what do you know, he was the father of the man I was thinking about. The slideshow is of the father and son, John-Pierre Cassel and Vincent Cassel. I love that they both followed the same career path. I can’t wait to check out more of the father’s films. He was one good looking man and a wonderful actor.

Madame Butterfly

I didn’t get a chance to talk about this last week, but I went to the opera with my friend. We enjoyed the show immensely. I usually love the male singers much more than the female ones. I have issues with sopranos who seem to get inside my ear canal and root around with a borer. I was thrilled to hear the artist in residence here in Pensacola sing the part of Butterfly so well. She floated her notes just the right way so they weren’t abrasive. The servant, Suzuki, was also played quite nicely. All in all, the singers were wonderful.

The best part of the whole thing was the staging. The setting was exquisite and the colors the stage director chose for the costuming and the trees were exquisite. The scene where Butterfly waited up all night for Pinkerton to return was so well staged, it really seemed like a long night into dawn was taking place right before our eyes. I was quite, quite impressed with our Opera company. Can’t wait for Rigoletto in March.

Friday Facts- January 27, 2012- Uyimbube

Uyimbube is a Zulu phrase meaning you are a lion. It was a lyric in a song written by an African singer of Zulu origin named Solomon Linda. The song was recorded in the 1930s. It was called Mbube.

Eventually, the song made its way to the international stage and was recorded by The Weavers as a song called Wimowah, which was a mis-hearing of the word Uyimbube from the original song.

We all know the song as The Lion Sleeps Tonight– here is the familiar version by The Tokens:
