This may or not be a fact since my research shows a couple of different origins for the tradition of foot and hand prints of stars  in the forecourt of Grauman’s Chinese Theater.  I’ve always heard it was Norma Talmadge, a star of the silent movies in the 1920s. She accidentally stepped in the wet concrete when it was being poured in front of the building. As I was getting this post ready, I found other explanations but most of them were on wikipedia so, who knows, right?  Anyway, I think it’s cool.

When I was in LA, I went to the theater, of course, and got some pictures of these markings. It’s kind of interesting how small some people’s feet are.

Here are a few pictures from when I went (not the one of Norma, of course) – I DID think I got a few shots of women’s feet but I guess not.  LOL

Special Guest- M.V. Freeman! What’s your Kryptonite?

The second book in my friend’s series is out.  She has an awesome post for us!  Check it out AND her new book out this week.  Thanks for popping in, M.V.

What is your Kryptonite?

We all have something we can’t seem to live without. It is at once our weakness and our strength.

It’s no secret, mine is coffee.  I love it. Have to have it. Sure, I can live without it but I’m grumpy. I’ll make a point of looking for a good cup every morning. I will also work for coffee…wait, I’m a writer that’s a given.

Now, like I said *everyone* has something.   Maybe it’s collecting shoes, or clothes, some love purses, or jewelry.  How about cars? I know everyone knows someone who can rattle details about engines.

But, our “kryptonite” the one thing we adore—can take a darker bent. Do you remember Sex in the City show?  In that series, the Carrie adored shoes (and clothes). How many times did she have to juggle to make ends meet because she just *had* to have that pair of shoes.

For me, if I drink too much coffee I get shakey, can’t sleep, and I am unable to focus. This is *not* pleasant. So, I never drink *that* much. But sometimes-we all over indulge.

My heroine in the second book in my Hidden Races Series, “ILLUMINATION” –the darkling Mina, an odd and dangerous woman adores Cheetos and Cheeze-puffs. It’s her personal Kryptonite and she’s known to comb through her friend’s cabinets looking for it.

My hero, Xander, doesn’t care for snack foods. He really doesn’t’ have an addiction, but does like a nice Scotch. It’s still not on the level of Mina’s adoration of Cheeze-puffs. His Kryptonite is Mina. It’s because of her—that he makes a decision that will change his life forever.

Could you? Could you give up what you can’t seem to live without?

I’ll admit—I’ve given up coffee for a period of time. I can do it, but I don’t like it.  But it’s never changed my life forever either—well, unless I drink it after five p.m. and I end up awake at 1 a.m. (And I blame insomnia—basically it’s me.)

How about you; what is the one thing that will stop you in your tracks, and you WILL go out of your way to get it. Is it Ice-cream? Or like me Coffee? Maybe a t.v. show, or your own hero/heroine—what is YOUR Kryptonite?

ILLUMINATION:Illumination_FINAL FRONT

Capricious and free-spirited, Mina Tepes is forever trying to intervene. Some would say she interferes. Her attempt to save a friend worsens a war already waging between her people, the Darks, and their reviled overlords, the Mages. Desperate, she turns to the man who saved her life as child–an enemy Mage named Xander. As part of the ruling class, Xander Fjordson should never have taken notice of Mina, but even as boy, one look into her large dark eyes and he was lost. As an adult, involvement with her has ripped his world to shreds. Though the war she unintentionally instigated has made them enemies, when she comes to him bleeding and injured, he is unable to say no. He puts at risk what is left of his status and his family as he follows her, knowing in the end he’d have to betray her. Together Xander and Mina begin to unravel terrible secrets as the war escalates. Soon Xander must choose: save his family or the woman who’s come to mean more to him than his own life.

Author Bio: M.V. Freeman lives in North Alabama. A nurse by day, at night she enjoys creating and exploring alternate worlds within our own. She gravitates toward stories of determined heroines and anti-heroes who push the boundaries as they both fight to find their light in the dark. M.V. is represented by Victoria Lea from The Aponte Literary Agency. Her award-winning and best-selling debut novel INCANDESCENT is the first in the Hidden Races Series. Currently she is working on the third book in the series, while plotting others. When not writing, she can be found reading, cooking, throwing around kettle bells, or making coffee.

Tuesday Tales – April 28, 2015- Key

The word of the week is key. I was going to use it in the traditional sense of an object used to unlock a door, safe deposit box or bicycle chain but none of that fit where I was in my snowstorm story that I am thinking of naming    as my friend Iris suggested. Anyway, here’s this week’s offering and don’t forget the other fab authors and their tales here.

After a couple more hours of steady work filling orders, Lanett glanced up at the clock. Two a.m. She took another glance at the number of people still there. There were only a few people left but sadly, Nancy was among them. Lanett found herself wondering why the woman wouldn’t leave. Ian had made it perfectly clear that he had no interest in even chatting with the lady. If a man spoke to her like he had, Lanett would’ve gotten herself as far away as she could. No way would she throw herself at a man who put on every appearance of abhorring her.

Simon stepped over to Lanett’s side. “Do you know the key to clearing out this place, love?”

“Having never had to do so, I can’t say that I do.”

“Watch and learn, ducks, watch and learn.” Simon looked out over the people who obviously had nowhere else they needed to be and shouted, “Last call.”

Before Lanett could tell him how easy that seemed, a few men yelled back at him. “It’s too soon. You can’t close yet.”

“That didn’t work out as you planned, did it, brother?” Ian arrived at Simon’s other side.

“It will.” Simon picked up a bat from behind the counter and brandished it. “I own this place last I looked and I say it’s last call. Anyone who disagrees can take it up with me girl, Nellie, here.” He held the bat up in the air.

Some guy called out, “What do you know about baseball, you lousy Brit?”

“More than you’ll ever learn about cricket, Charlie. Now go home. That wife of yours probably wouldn’t like you so much with a dent in yer head from old Nell.”

“What about a beer before you maim me?” Charlie asked as the rest of his friends laughed.

“That was what last call meant, you stooge.  One last beer before you go home. But not one that takes two hours to drink.” Simon grinned at the man who was clearly a regular since everything had been said in good humor.

“You ever known me to take even thirty minutes with one?”

Simon had put down Nellie and was loading beers onto a tray. He turned to Lanett. “Could you deliver these so we can at least get rid of that bunch? They live nearby and can walk home.”

Tuesday Tales- April 21, 2104- Picture Prompt

This week’s word is not a word at all but a picture prompt. Since I’m writing about a snow storm, I had to finagle this a bit to make it work. The picture prompts are limited to 300 words. I’ve picked up the story still in the bar with the snow coming down.  Be sure to check out the other Tales here!  Badge for TT - very small

“You want all the men for yourself, don’t you?” Nancy snarled at Lanett.

“No. I have no idea what you mean. Why don’t you take the chance to go home now while people are still able to travel?”

“You can’t tell me what to do.”

“I can tell you that you’re not welcome here.” Ian joined the conversation.

“There’s a whole table of men over there that disagree with you.” Nancy smirked.

“Well, there you go then. Obviously Lanett doesn’t want all the men to herself. She very kindly left an entire table of them for you.”

“Like she has the power to do that.”

“You’ve obviously given her that power if you think all the men want her over you.” Ian took hold of Lanett’s elbow. “Come on. We have orders to fill.”

Lanett shook her head over Nancy’s instability again. She was concerned about what might happen if they did get snowbound together. The woman was a loose cannon and Lanett didn’t relish being around her when there was nowhere safe to go. Her mind involuntarily summoned up that dark, tree-lined road she and Ian had driven down to the restaurant on Long Island. Lanett was suddenly glad at least they were in a lighted pub now. Lanett guessed she’d rather be able to see the attack coming if Nancy tried something and not be blindsided like she would be in the woods.

She shook her head, put the annoying woman out of her mind and returned to the bar.

The rest of the night went by quickly but around midnight, it became clear that the snow would definitely stop anyone else from leaving.

Tuesday Tales – April 14, 2014- Nail

This week’s word is nail. I’m still in the story with no name. I wish I could think of one but so far, nada.  We are still in the bar and it’s still snowing.

Check out the other stories hereBadge for TT - very small

“Excuse me a moment,” Lanett said. She walked over to the plate glass window and peered out. Snow was falling. It was beautiful at the moment but the wind seemed to be picking up. For the first time, she realized she may actually be forced to spend the night here. Maybe that wasn’t such a good idea after all. It had sounded romantic when she was flirting with Ian but now that the reality was setting in, she wasn’t sure at all that she’d made the right call.

“Regrets?” Ian asked at her shoulder.

“I’m not sure that’s the right word.”

“You still have time to catch a cab if you want to try. It looks like the road is still passable.”

“I hate to leave you and Simon alone with so many people still here.” She looked around. “I see Nancy is still over at that table full of men.”

“Like I told you earlier, I can handle her.”

“She’s pretty nasty.”

“I’ve dealt with some pretty horrible people in my time. You have no idea how cruel and snobbish people in certain social circles can be.” A shadow passed over Ian’s face causing Lanett to wonder just what had happened in his past to cause such an expression.

“That sounds ominous.”

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to make you think I’d had this horrible life of being mistreated.”

“I didn’t think that.” Lanett ran the nail of her index finger down the condensation on the window.

“You should smile when you say that. I’d be more convinced.”

Come by and say hello! I’m charring with Susana about my story JEREMIAH’S CHARGE.

susana's avatarSusana's Parlour

Thanks, Susana, for allowing me to come by and share a little about my story for the Beaux, Ballrooms, and Battles anthology. When I first started thinking about what I wanted to focus on in my style, I knew I wanted a sassy, feisty heroine because they are always fun to write. Of course, when I chose such a heroine, I knew she would have to get in some kind of trouble and what better scandal than to make a spectacle of herself at Lady Richmond’s ball?

I also wanted a hero who could bring balance to the heroine’s life. Jeremiah is a strong, silent type but I think they go well together. She takes him out of his comfort zone and he reins her in. Well, no, not really. He doesn’t. Ha ha.

One of the things I’ve always found intriguing about the run up to the battle is…

RONE Awards: Tequila Mockingbird in Suspense Category

I found out that my romantic suspense novel, Tequila Mockingbird, was nominated for a 2015 RONE (Reward of Novel Excellence). This award is sponsored by InD’Tale magazine. I’m excited and thrilled to be nominated. This story was a lot of fun to write and is an adventure through Mexico. Voting is the week of April 27, 2015 if you’re inclined to give it a vote. Here is the link. I find it interesting that one of my critique partners, Virginia Kelly, is also nominated in the same category. I love it.

Here’s part of an Amazon review: A fun summer read with a hot hero and a smart heroine. It reminded me of Romancing the Stone. The action is quick and kept me up reading way to late to “see what happens next.”
