Tuesday Tales- No Post

Badge for TT - very small

This week on Tuesday Tales, instead of a word prompt, there is a a picture prompt and since it didn’t fit into my story from 1937 Europe, I wasn’t able to come up with a scene that would work. Here’s the lovely picture:

Here’s the link if you want to pop over and see what everyone else did with it.

My Cat, The Interior Decorator

My cat Hobbes is always up to some kind of mischief. Today, he decided the curtains are not to his liking and he needed to adjust the way they are hung.

Friday Fact- August 9, 2013- V-J Day

The official day that Japan announced their surrender effectively ending WWII was August 15, 1945 in Japan. It was the 14th in the USA since there is a time difference but the war was over either way you look at it. The day is commemorated here in the USA on September 2 and in the UK on August 15.

Today, August 9, is the day that Nagasaki was bombed. August 6th was the day Hiroshima was bombed. These bombs as well as the Soviet Union declaring war on Japan on August 9th were what led the Japanese toward surrender. I always wondered why Stalin left it so late to declare war on them but maybe he knew it was all over after those atomic bombs so it wouldn’t hurt to climb aboard the war wagon with us.

In the USA, the end of the war is celebrated on September 2nd as that is the day of the official surrender ceremony which occurred on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay but the war was pretty much done in August. President Truman declared September 2nd officially V-J Day.

Here’s the iconic photo from Times Square.

Fiona pulled her hair up in a twist securing it with a crystal barrette. She sighed a little as she compared her fake accessories with the real diamond ones the other ladies in the first class coaches were going to be draped in at dinner. She made a face at herself in the mirror and shrugged. She mimicked her mother’s voice, “Don’t be getting above your station, luvvie. It’ll lead to heartache.”

With one last look at the mirror, Fiona smoothed an errant piece of hair down and picking up her shawl and key, walked out of her compartment and straight into Win himself.

Friday Facts- August 2, 2013- Ice Cream Soda Day

First things first. I’m guest blogging today at Christina Cole’s blog here. I’m giving a wee bit of writing advice. Come by and keep me company if you have time.

I have a friend named Joan who, every month, sends out a calendar of holidays and events for that month. She spends a lot of time on this endeavor and I enjoy seeing what’s on tap. This day, for example, is Ice Cream Soda Day. I’m not a super big fan of the ole ice cream soda mainly because I’m not much on carbonated beverages. There was a place in Birmingham, Alabama when I was in law school that made one that was very light on the soda – it was chocolate and was divine.

There appears to be some controversy on the internet about this day as I also found references to June 29th. That on June 29, in 1874, Robert McCay invented this treat by adding phosphate soda to ice cream. Whatever day we celebrate this man, let’s be happy he was so clever.

What’s your favorite ice cream soda? Do you like root beer floats? My sister loves them and all I can say is ick! LOL!

Tuesday Tales – Bargain

This week’s word is Bargain. Sadly, I’m not writing much these days but these prompts are making me be a little productive. I have next week’s done too but it’s on the same page in the book as this one. I’m not sure if I’m going to continue the story. Read the other entries here.

Fiona sat beside the window lost in thought until time to dress for dinner. She wasn’t sure exactly what to think about Cordelia and her adventure. She sure was brave for someone Fiona thought of as spoiled and overprotected. To survive that push off the train and still want to come back onboard knowing that the very person who tossed her off would still be around and maybe try again. Or try something much worse. Fiona couldn’t decide if the woman was crazy or not. She was pretty sure that she herself would’ve taken the first transport back home.

As Fiona slipped on her second new dinner gown, she thought about all that had transpired since she boarded the train in Paris. This trip she won was certainly turning into much more than she bargained for. A murder, a friend being tossed off the train and into the countryside, that scary man, Johnny Rozzelle who she was sure was a member of the mafia and then there was Win. Handsome Winchester Barrington, IV. Fiona let out a sigh as she slid the gown over her hips. He was really quite spectacular even though she knew he was out of her reach.
