Tuesday Tales- July 9, 2013- Long

When Win arrived at his compartment a little after three a.m., he was stunned to see Cordelia’s bunk empty. Damn her hide. She’s probably out cavorting with someone and making me look like a man who can’t control his wife. He knew he shouldn’t have trusted her to behave. Who knew how long she’d been gone since he’d gotten stuck watching the American Donald Perry try to out drink and out gamble the Frenchman, Jacques Cassel.

Win stayed and watched in case one of the men said something to assist him in his investigation but it was a colossal waste of time. The only thing the late night game did for him was make him curious how the Cassel man could eat so many peppermints while he drank prodigious amounts of scotch. By the time the game was over, the table was littered with empty glasses, full ashtrays and a pile of candy wrappers. Tired and grouchy, all Win wanted to do was sleep.

He tugged off his tie and undid his cufflinks. Tossing them on the side table, he picked up the note that had been set there and opened it. The writing was too neat to be Cordelia’s and he glanced to the end. It was signed Fiona Vancleave. Well that was a relief. She must be writing to say that Cordelia was staying with her.

NEW COVER! MOON DANCE

Here’s the cover for my romantic suspense story from Desert Breeze Publishing. It comes out on July 21 and in this one, the hero was blinded by a fire so it was an interesting one to write. I hope readers like it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Olga Quinn hopes her relocation to London to work on their space shuttle program is the life changing move she needs after the loss of her co-worker in a workplace explosion. She meets Gabriel Swicord, a former fireman turned celebrity radio personality and deejay. He lost his sight while rescuing a family in the line of duty and has immersed himself in music and work since then. For a few days, Olga and Gabe burn hot for each other and then things turn cold.

Someone is murdering women who patronize the club where Gabe spins records. It appears that he’s the connection to the dead women and his name and face are plastered all over the news. Things are not looking good for Olga’s peaceful new life and when the killers turn kidnappers, things really begin to heat up.

Friday Facts- July 5, 2013- Rock Bottom Remainders

The Rock Bottom Remainders is a band made up of authors. They got their name from the term remainder which in publishing is the publisher’s sale of the rest of the stock on unsold books at a reduced price, usually in bulk. I love the idea of this name. It’s irreverent and cheeky.

The band has raised a lot of funds for charity and has many famous members including Stephen King, Dave Barry, Scott Turow, Ridley Scott and Mitch Albom.

I love that they give to charity. It’s admirable for them to give back in such a fun way.

Tuesday Tales- July 2, 2013- Sun

Badge for TT - very small

This week’s word is SUN. My story i’m working on is still the 1930s train trip mystery called Senior Assassin. Be sure to click on this link to see the other entries for the week.

Rozzelle grabbed Fiona’s upper arm and peered into her face. “Little lady, you’re on the wrong side of your compartment door dressed provocatively and I suggest you get yourself back behind the door lock on your cabin before someone molests you.”

“I have to get Cordelia and believe me, once I do, I plan on just that. Now, let me pass.”

“Listen to me. You’re not paying attention. You better not go any further or you could be in danger. This is the end of the first class area and you have no idea what’s on the other side of that door there.” He pointed at the exit.

“But my friend—”

“Forget your friend if you want to be safe. I’m telling you, little lady, it’s dangerous out there and I can guarantee that your friend has already probably found that danger.”

“Then I truly must go and get her.”

“You seem not to want to see the sun rise, missy. I’m telling you, only the worst of people are up and about at this time of night brokering deals of the kind that have been done on this train since it started running over a half a century ago. Go back to your safe little room and go to bed.”

“How dare you tell me what to do, you insufferable—”

Instead of letting her finish her sentence, Rozzelle jerked Fiona to his chest and grabbed a wad of the fabric of her gown and robe in his fist. He pressed his lips on hers and tried to poke his tongue in her mouth. She kicked his shin and twisted away from him so fast that she heard the fabric of her gown tear.

Unaware of how big the rip might be since she couldn’t see it for the tears welling in her eyes, she ran blindly down the corridor back in the direction of her own compartment.

I bet you didn’t know that three presidents died on July 4th. It’s kind of ironic that Thomas Jefferson did since he was so pivotal in the creation of this country as well as the Declaration of Independence. Two other early presidents, John Adams and James Monroe also passed away on July 4th. It’s also interesting (at least to me) that they were president #2, #3 and #5. All three were great men who helped make this country a wonderful place to live.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday next week and remember the sacrifices that the founding fathers made for our freedom. Also say a little thanks to these presidents who served us well.

Noticing Hugo Marchman seated near the man who had leapt on the train as it left the station, Win worked his way through the tables and joined them. “What ho, Marchman? Any news on who’s responsible for the death of Lucien?”

Before Marchman could answer, the other man held his hand out. “Mack Plant. Remember me?”

“Sure do. How are you?”

Plant glanced around the room. “There’s lots of work to do here to find out what exactly is going on. I see a lot of possibilities but the good news is that there’s not a lot of people who could have done it since the train has been moving for a while and the only suspects have been onboard since Paris. No one has gotten off either so the pool of suspects is finite. I only hope that the railway company doesn’t let anyone debark at the next station.”

“You sound like you’ve been mulling this over for a bit. I hope you’re right about the company not letting anyone off.” Win wondered why this Plant man was so in touch with the ways of investigating crimes. Was he a policeman?

“I would think that they won’t. They sure don’t want the rail company to have bad publicity. I predict they will have law enforcement get on at the next stop and question everyone on board.” Hugo raised his hand to get a waiter’s attention and made a circular motion for refills for he and Plant. He turned to Win. “What’re you drinking, Barrington?”

“Whiskey. I’ve gotten quite used to it, I’m afraid.”

“What’s that mean?” Plant asked.

“Ahh, see, I came of age when Prohibition was in and we drank a lot of whiskey in an iced tea glass to pass it off as legal.” Win laughed. “Dad had it served at dinner each night.”

“Better watch out,” Hugo pointed his cigarette in Plant’s direction. “This guy’s a cop from Chicago. He could run you in.”

“I highly doubt that. The statute of limitations has run.” Win looked over at Plant. “If you’re from Chicago, why the British accent?”

“Ever heard of undercover work?” Plant asked.

“You’re not much of a pro at it if you’ve already told Marchman and me that you’re American and law enforcement to boot.”

“I could be feeding you both a load of hokey. For all you know, I’m from Cambridgeshire and have lived there my whole life running a punting company.”

“No, Mr. Plant. That’s not possible at all. Remember, I’m from Oxford and I think I can spot a Cambridge man from fifty paces. You’re American all right.” Hugo traded his used glass for the full one the waiter held out.
