Friday Facts- September 9, 2011- Red and Yellow and Hunger

If you’ve ever wondered why restaurants are usually red or yellow on the outside, it’s because the colors make a person hungry. Red is the color that stimulates the heart rate and causes excitement and energy. Yellow is associated with speed. So there ya go, fast food and jiffy stores like to use these colors to attract customers.

A Tale of Two Movies & One Actress

This past weekend, I was able to enjoy two movies. I went to see The Debt and The Help. They were very different films and both were good. The Debt  was set in both 1997 and 1967ish- it was well acted and interesting.

The Help was based in 1962 and was also well acted. The difference is that this one oozed talent from the young actors and the costumes and setting were wonderfully done. The clothes were spot on for the era and I loved the old buildings in downtown Jackson, Mississippi.

The daughter of Ron Howard was deliciously evil as Hilly Holbrook. You can tell she’s worked hard on her craft even though she was born with stellar genes.  The two women that played the maids, Minny and Aibileen were all kinds of wonderful as well. But the actress I want to talk about here on this post is Jessica Chastain.

You see, she was in both of the movies I saw this weekend and she was so good and so believable in both roles that if I didn’t know both of the characters were her, I’d never have guessed it. She played Celia in The Help and she was delightful as the woman from the other side of the tracks that no one wanted to be friends with because of the odious Hilly. Jessica was in a bleached blond wig and dressed provocatively and she was such a great drunk in one scene in particular.

In The Debt, Jessica plays young Rachel (the 1967 version of Helen Mirren). She was awesome in the role. It was a very serious role. She played a kick ass Mossad agent. She shone in the part. The movie was quite dark and each time she appeared on screen, she lit up the celluloid. She was worth the price of admission when all along I thought I was going to see Ciaran Hinds and Helen Mirren.

I see great things in this young woman’s future, and I, for one, plan to follow her career.

Labor Day Weekend

We had a very wet Labor Day Weekend. It started raining on Friday and didn’t stop for days. On late Saturday, #2 son asked me if it was going to rain forever. I told him just til the holiday weekend was over. LOL!  It has been in the high 90s here and unbearable. Until the rain. As I write this, it’s 6:35 pm. on Monday and it’s 72 degrees. It’s supposed to be in the 60s by midnight. On Tues night, it’s supposed to be 57 degrees.

I have big plans. I’m going to go lay in my yard, wet or not, and soak up all that cool air. I’m gonna wallow in it. Just use Google Earth to find me. I’m north of Pensacola. I’ll be the one with her arms and legs spread as if I was making snow angels.

Another Fun Trivia Fact

I saw this and thought it was a fun thing to share.  I guess this was the entertainment division.

In 1944, Maj. Clark Gable’s army discharge papers were signed by President-to-be Ronald Reagan, then a captain.

Friday Fact- September 2, 2011- Bamako

I bet you thought I’d be talking about Labor Day or something like that today since it’s the start of the holiday weekend. But, no, I’m not going to be predictable. I’m going to talk about Bamako, Mali. You may be asking why in the heckf ire I’d be talking about such a thing.  I’ll enlighten you.  I was trying to tweet to my friend, Sayde Grace, who was giving me grief about the Alabama fans penchant for yelling Roll Tide. I have told her over the years how much that grates on my nerves when my husband’s family does it. So, of course, she was tweeting it to me since the season starts this weekend.

I wanted to call her a Bad Bama Babe and the crazy auto-correct on my Ipad kept changing Bama to Bamako. Well, dang, then I had to google that to see what the heck it was because, surely, that was not a word.  Lo and behold, it is. Huh.

Bamako is the capital of a country in Africa called Mali (not to be confused with Bali which is in the Indian Ocean and where part of my book Surfer Bride takes place). This country is on the Niger River and has a population of 1.8 million. It’s the fastest growing city in Africa. The name Bamako comes from the word for Crocodile River which is Bambara (not to be confused with Bam Magera, a professional skateboarder).  So, any bets on how many crocs are in the river? I shudder to think.

Speaking of Surfer Bride, today I’m on Arabella Stokes’ blog trying to chat about that book, but I got interrupted by that pesky Brit, Percy Hicks. http://www.arabellastokes.com/

Was Home Sick Today

Nope, not homesick as in missing my home, but at home- feeling sick. I don’t know what it was but I couldn’t stay awake and I ache all over. I’m calling it  “I’m worn out-itis”

I’m hopeful that I’ll be all right tomorrow, after all, I’ve been awake for 2.5 hours in a row now.

Milestone Day

I spent 1/2 the day today with #2 son at the DMV- He’s 17 and has had zero interest in getting his driver’s license. He got his learner’s permit when he turned 15 but never really cared about the real thing. UNTIL now, when he’s a senior in high school. So, he finally went in to take the test and passed it.

It’s a great day for him. I’m excited for him, too but I recall from the #1 son’s early days of drving alone, my angst and worry every time the door shut behind him.  All I can say is, Here we go again!  More grey hair is on the way!

Grey hare

Happy Monday!
