Tuesday Tales – February 2, 2016- Stolen

The word of the week for this first week in February in Tuesday Tales is stolen. What a great word it is. I’m still working on the 20th century historical. I have gone backward a few scenes this time as my mom has been in the hospital and I haven’t had a chance to write new words. Check out the other tales here.

Before Declan could even register that the truck had stopped moving, it started rumbling along again.

“Where are we and what are you doing in Poland?” Declan asked.

“Clearly you know where we are since you ask why I’m in Poland.”

“I mean, what part of Poland?”

“We’re almost to the Czechoslovakian border now.” The man smiled down at Declan. “Aren’t you going to introduce me to your friend?”

“You know this person?” Yana asked.

“Yes. I do. The last time I saw him, I would have called him a colleague. Now, I’m not so sure since he’s holding us against our will.” Declan stood and assisted Yana to her feet.

“My dear sir, I am actually saving your lives. You should be grateful.” The man stuck out his hand. “I’m Roman Popov.”

“How do you figure you’re saving our lives? We were on a motorcycle well on our way out of Poland when you sent your men to chase us over rough terrain in order to take us to who knows where.”

“You were actually well on your way to being stopped by a roadblock.”

“What do you mean and if that were true, why would you risk your own clearly criminal act of stealing gold to come to the aid of two people who may have merely been out on a nice, innocent ride?”

“When one sees those people turn and run, all thoughts of believing in an innocent ride, as you call it, go right out of one’s head.” Popov laughed. “Besides, I could tell it was you from the moment I saw the cycle.”

“Really? How is that?” Yana asked. “We were far away.”

“I have a pair of binoculars. I was using them to scan the horizon.”

“So you could tell if anyone was on your trail to stop you from stealing this gold?” Declan moved to lean against the wall but remembered in time that it wasn’t a wall but a canvas covering. He stumbled a little as he regained his footing.

“What makes you think we’re stealing the gold? Why couldn’t I be taking it to a safe place for the Polish government?” Popov asked.

“Yes, Declan, why are you saying that now? You said before that you thought the very thing Mr. Popov is saying is what he’s doing.”

That was before I knew it was him.”

“Am I as bad as all that, Cavanaugh?”

“Will one of you please tell me how you know each other?” Yana asked.

“We’re part of the same organization,” Declan said.

“Then why don’t you trust him? Why do you think this gold is stolen?”

“To come to Cavanaugh’s defense even though that’s against my better judgment in front of one so lovely as you, he’s got good reason to suspect me of such.”

“Are you a thief then?” The look of horror on Yana’s face almost made Declan laugh.

Popov bowed. “I used to be one of the most talented cat burglars in Europe. I gave it up when I was recruited for the current work.” He clapped Declan on the shoulder. “Can’t blame this one for thinking I’d returned to my old ways.”

“Where is the gold actually going? If we’re almost to Czechoslovakia, then clearly, the bars aren’t meant to stay in Poland.” Declan ran a hand though his hair as he suddenly remembered what else Popov said. “And what kind of roadblock?”

Popov turned to Yana. “Don’t you hate a man who can’t stay on one train of thought?”

Tuesday Tales- January 26, 2016- Wood

The word of the week is wood. The gals of Tuesday Tales have some wonderful stories going and I’m sure this week will be no different. Click this link to check out the other tales.

I’m still working on my vampire story and am at about 45,000 words now. Finally moving along at a greater pace than I have been. YAY.  Our hero and the woman he’s supposed to be rescuing have been captured and have just realized they are in a cargo hold with a lot of gold bars. And I don’t mean Hershey bars. LOL

“Yes. I can see why they would want to move it. But why bother with us? Why did they chase us and take us into custody? If they needed to get their treasure safe, why spend the time to capture us?”

“I don’t know but I’m afraid we’re going to find out and it might not be pleasant.” Declan couldn’t decide whether to tell her about knowing the man who led them to the truck. He thought he’d keep it to himself for a while. After all, hadn’t she been secretive herself?

“No. I think it won’t be nice.” She let out a bark of laughter. “The only nice thing that’s happened to me lately was meeting you.”

“That’s kind of you to say.”

“You know I don’t mean it in kind way. You know what I mean yet you ignore this obvious tie between us. Why you would be willing to die without kissing me, I don’t know.”

“You forget. I have kissed you.” Declan ducked his head and didn’t make eye contact with her. “Let’s replace the lid. We don’t know when they will stop and check on us.”

Yana placed her hand on one edge of the lid. “You’re not fooling me by changing the subject.” Scraping her fingernail on the wood, she added, “and you know that kiss wasn’t real. It was a show.”

“It was real to me.” He thought back on the day she met him at the station. Yes, that kiss was real. He’d put all his unrequited lust for Liesl behind it. But then he realized. It wasn’t fair to her to say he’d kissed her because she wasn’t the one on his mind when he’d done it.

“Bah.” Yana turned away.

Well, hell, he couldn’t have her mad at him and she did have a point. They had no idea where this journey was leading them. This may very well be his last chance.

Stepping around the crate, he came up behind her and took hold of her upper arm.

When she glanced over her shoulder, he turned her to face him and pulled her into his embrace.

New Release Coming

This past week has been a bit of a whirlwind. One of my chapter mates let us know that her publisher was looking for Valentine’s Day stories between 10-15,000 words. I happened to have one as it was out on submission with one of my other publishers when that publisher closed its doors so it never got out in the world. So, I submitted it.

The next morning, I got the contract and before lunch, I got the edits. They were minimal so I knocked them out on my lunch break.

The story comes out on Feb 12, 2016 with preorders as of Feb 5, 2016. We got the cover Friday and even though my story is totally not sexy like this cover, this is it. I think I am violating my own rules about PG13 by putting it here but it’s in the contract so, here it is.  LOL!

My story is called To Be Or Not To Be…My Valentine.  The anthology will be available in print  and ebook from Solstice Publishing and I believe the story will also be offered as a short by itself. valentine cover.png

Tuesday Tales- January 19, 2016- Paint

This week the word prompt is paint. I am back to working on the vampire story I left behind for a while. This is about 30,000 words into the book so you may get confused. LOL!

We join the hero on a train trying to escape from Russia with the young woman he was sent to rescue. He’s been warned by a former lover that she’s  been required by their captor to drug his tea  and that she will try to minimize the effects by not putting in a full dose. Check out the other writers’ entries here.

Before Declan knew it, day was upon them and Schumacher returned to their rail car. “Wake up. I have breakfast on the way and we’re almost at the border. Another couple of hours should bring us in.”

Declan shook his head. He hated people who were too happy in the mornings. And who would’ve thought a vampire would be someone who liked the early part of the day?

He rose and raked his hands through his hair. Sure he needed a shave, he made his way to the small lavatory in the car. Even that area was opulent. Gold paint on the wainscoting complemented the cream wallpaper with tiny gold flecks in it. Declan wondered anew just who owned this carriage.

His morning ablations done, he returned to the main section of the railcar and sat at the small table that had been laid with a basket of assorted breads as well as boiled eggs. There was a pot on the table that Declan presumed contained the tainted tea.

Reluctant to take in the concoction, he poured himself a cup. It smelled good but again, he really didn’t want to drink it.

“Don’t you like tea?” Schumacher sat across from him. “You seem to be in a trance of some sort. Drink up.”

“I was enjoying the heat of the cup as well as the scent. What is that I smell in there?”

Schumacher picked up the small silver pot in front of his place. “I think it’s some kind of special blend Allison makes. I prefer coffee myself so I haven’t tried it. It seems she puts some kind of flower in it. Maybe that’s what you smell.”

“Hibiscus.” Annette turned from where she stood by the window.

“Where does one get hibiscus this time of year?” Declan asked.

“You obviously don’t know anything about flowers. They bloom all year in some places and there are these places you may have heard of. They’re called hot houses.”

“Thanks, Allison. I’ve never heard of such things. It’s nice to be educated.” Declan decided he better do as she’d asked the night before and drink the tea. He took a sip.

Yana came to the table. “I’d like some tea as well, please. I’ve never had any with this hibiscus flower in it.”

It seemed Yana was going to cooperate. Declan passed her a full cup of tea. Hoping Allison hadn’t lied and was going to put them under so far that they’d never wake, he took another drink of his.

“Would anyone like an egg?” Schumacher asked.

Now Declan was worried they were laced with something as well. “No thanks. I’ll just have some bread.” He hoped it would soak up the tea faster.

Yana took an egg and ate it.

Before too many minutes had passed, Declan felt the effects of the tea. Woozy and more than a little light-headed, he stood. The car tilted. He grabbed onto the back of the chair. “Sorry, I’m feeling a bit ill.” He could tell his words were slurred but it was hard to hear them. Things were muffled and people seemed too be moving in slow motion. Dear God. She’d given him too much.

Goodbye, Mr. Rickman

I love Alan Rickman, as most of you know. I am heartbroken today at the news of his death. Here’s a video I love. RIP, dear man.

An Open Letter to the Person Who Called Me Dishonorable

Dear Unnamed Author:

This letter is to respond to your completely unnecessary attack on me and my character. I am determined to ignore your venom but first, I must get this off my chest.

You asked me three times in separate communications to swap reviews of each other’s books. I normally don’t agree to do this but you were persistent and so I decided to go forward against my better judgment.

To tell the truth, your book turned me off completely. Even the blurb was almost impossible for me to get through. It was full of rage, abusive words and was utterly racist. But, I had agreed to read it, so read it I did.

When I finished, I was appalled and wondered even how a publisher would accept such vitriol. It took me a while to figure out how to write a review that I could post since I really hated the book. But, I had agreed to do it so I slanted the review to the best spin on the book I could. I wasn’t happy about putting it up, but I did. I immediately received an email from you to please put it up in another place. Which I did.

Months passed. I would check periodically to see if you had reciprocated on the review deal but you never did. The more I thought about what I posted as my review of your book, the more I regretted it. I get a lot of correspondence that people rely on my reviews when deciding to purchase and, the more time that went by, the more I knew I needed to remove that review. I wasn’t being true to myself.

You actually made it easy for me to remove it since you hadn’t lived up to your part of the bargain. Almost the minute I removed them, I suddenly heard from you- and you were almost done with my book and would post the review as soon as I put mine back up. Really? You think I am that naïve? You were merely wanting that review back and would say anything to get it.

Two more months pass and last night, I get an email from you. It was couched as, “put back up the review you did for me and I will give you a favorable review.” Not that you liked my book but that tit for tat, if I went back and reposted, I could get the benefit of the bargain I made four months ago.

When I declined- in the nicest possible way- without making any confrontational remarks, you came back immediately on the attack and accused me of being dishonorable and not living up to what I agreed to. Your angry words were cruel and unkind. Perhaps I should have expected such since your book was the same.

If you think about how things really went down, you’d see that I did exactly what I said I would. I honored my word. When you didn’t reciprocate, I removed the review that was actually eating at my conscience. So, ultimately, I followed my own heart and showed that I do have integrity by pulling the review.

This is one of the reasons I don’t agree to swap reviews. Your behavior was abominable and uncalled for. I am sticking to my guns from now on. I will never again agree to swap reviews with someone. I will review the books I choose.

Thank you for reminding me just how nasty some people can be. It’s a lesson I sometimes forget as I try to think the best of people until I am proven wrong. You definitely proved me wrong in this situation.

Jillian

** Edited to add**- I see you’ve now had your friend post a 3 star review of my book. Let’s talk about the definition of dishonorable. AND since you gave her my ARC, that’s more loss of integrity, isn’t it?
